Alice in Wonderland: Oxford and Christ Church

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland grew out of Oxford: Lewis Carroll wrote it as a Christ Church mathematician for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the college's Dean, and the story began on a boat trip from Folly Bridge to Godstow. The route runs from Christ Church Cathedral, where Carroll met the Liddells in 1856, through Christ Church, the river, the Botanic Garden and the Natural History Museum's dodo to the St Aldate's shop that became the Old Sheep Shop. Most places can still be visited. Links between scenes and places are readings, not Carroll's own statements.

Wyatt Earp: Dodge City to Tombstone

Wyatt Earp's story runs from the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, Kansas, to the Oriental Saloon, the lot beside Fly's and Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone, Arizona, and on to the railroad tracks of Tucson. It follows the lawman from his 1878 job as a Dodge City assistant marshal through the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on 26 October 1881 to the killings that followed in 1882. Exact buildings are uncertain for several stops, and those pins are marked approximate.

Lost in Translation: Tokyo and Kyoto

Bob is a fading American movie star in Tokyo to advertise whiskey; Charlotte is a disillusioned recent graduate, married for two years. Both are far from home, and they find each other at the Park Hyatt Tokyo. The route follows their story in the film's order: the neon streets of Shinjuku, the hotel, Shibuya Crossing and a karaoke room, then Charlotte's day trip to Kyoto Station, Nanzen-ji and Heian Shrine. Coppola shot for just 27 days, many of its locations in real places of business and public areas. The karaoke branch is pinned approximately.

Ulysses: One Day in Dublin

James Joyce's Ulysses is one ordinary day, 16 June 1904, in Dublin, told in eighteen episodes through Leopold Bloom, a Jewish advertisement canvasser, and Stephen Dedalus, who starts the day in a tower by the sea. This route walks the day in the order the novel runs it: from the Martello tower at Sandycove where it opens to Howth Head, where Molly Bloom's memory ends it with a yes. Almost every stop is a place you can still stand in: the tower where Joyce stayed in 1904, the strand Stephen walks, the street of the chemist's where Bloom buys soap, the cemetery of the funeral, the pub where he eats his sandwich, the library where he passes between Stephen and Mulligan, the quay of the Ormond Hotel and the maternity hospital. The last stop is a recollection rather than a setting: the novel never says where on Howth Head the two of them lay.

Dracula: From Transylvania to Whitby

Dracula crosses Transylvania's Borgo Pass and Whitby's harbour, steps and churchyard, then Purfleet on the Thames and London Zoo. A young English solicitor becomes the Count's prisoner; Dracula ships himself to England in fifty boxes of earth and is hunted back to his mountains by Van Helsing's band. Stoker never visited Transylvania; he built its geography from books and maps, and the English half from places he knew. The route follows the novel's diaries and letters stop by stop: the inn at Bistritz, the Borgo Pass, the Black Sea port of Varna, the harbour, steps and churchyard of Whitby, Purfleet on the Thames, London Zoo and the final race up the Danube at Galatz.

The Sun Also Rises: Paris to Pamplona

Jake Barnes, an American newspaperman wounded in the war, spends his Paris nights in the cafés of Montparnasse with Lady Brett Ashley — the woman he loves and cannot have. Then the whole crowd heads south: trout fishing in the Pyrenees, then a week of San Fermín in Pamplona, where drink, jealousy and a nineteen-year-old matador break everything open. Hemingway built the novel from his own trips of 1924 and 1925, and almost every stop can still be visited: the café on the Boulevard du Montparnasse, the inn at Burguete, the arcade café on Pamplona's main square, the bullring, the beach at San Sebastián and the Madrid restaurant where the book's last meal is eaten.
