  1. Inventor Caractacus Potts, a widower with two children, lives in a windmill, and the real one is Cobstone Mill on Turville Hill in Buckinghamshire. Built around 1816, it was cosmetically restored in 1967 for the film. Cameras rolled from 17 July to 4 October that year. The mill is still a private home, so enjoy it from the lane and the hill around it.

They take Grandpa Potts, outhouse included, aloft in the Baron's airship, and the family follows in Chitty, which sprouts wings. The airship was filmed hovering over the hillside near the village of Turville. The village has historic stone and timber houses around a green, and the hill above it is the same one that carries Cobstone Mill.

  6. Baron Bomburst's castle is Ludwig II's kitsch fantasy of Neuschwanstein. Inside the story, the Vulgarian children swarm the banquet hall on Bomburst's birthday, overcome his guests and capture the Baron. King Ludwig died in 1886 and the castle opened to the public soon afterwards. Tickets are sold in Hohenschwangau village below.

The Exorcist is set in Georgetown, Washington DC, and opens in the ruins of Hatra in northern Iraq. The real Exorcist Steps, Healy Hall and Lauinger Library are on the Georgetown campus, and a hospital on Roosevelt Island stood in for a Washington scene. The route follows the film from Merrin's dig at Hatra to the MacNeil house and the stairs where Father Karras falls.

The Birds: Filming Locations from San Francisco to Bodega Bay

Hitchcock's The Birds is set in Bodega Bay, California, and filmed there too: the harbor, the Tides Wharf restaurant and the schoolhouse in nearby Bodega are all real places you can find on the map. The route starts in San Francisco's Union Square, follows Melanie Daniels across the bay to the Brenner farm, and ends with the crows at the schoolhouse and the diner siege. Some Bodega Bay scenes were shot on a studio set, so the pins mark the real places the film borrowed.

Twister is set in Oklahoma, and was filmed there at Fairfax, Kaw Lake, Wakita and Guthrie before the finale moved to Eldora, Iowa. Storm chasers Jo and Bill race tornadoes across the plains. This route follows the story from the opening farm to the F5 climax. Several stops are towns rather than single sites, and the Eldora finale house is private.
