Crocodile Dundee: Kakadu to New York

Crocodile Dundee follows a Northern Territory bushman from the billabongs of Kakadu to the Plaza Hotel and the subways of Manhattan. Its Walkabout Creek is really the pub at McKinlay, Queensland; its outback is Anbangbang Billabong and Gunlom Falls; its New York runs from Newark airport to Columbus Circle.

  1. New York reporter Sue Charlton travels to Walkabout Creek to meet the legendary "Crocodile" Dundee. On screen it is a Northern Territory township; in fact the first scenes were shot in McKinlay, Queensland, and the Federal Hotel was given a false façade to become the rough-and-tumble Walkabout Creek Inn. Here Sue finds that Mick's leg is not missing, only scarred, and a hunter who calls him a poacher is knocked out with one punch. After the film's worldwide success the pub took the name Walkabout Creek Hotel, and it is still McKinlay's best-known landmark.

  2. Offended when Mick says a "sheila" could never survive the Outback, Sue sets off alone with his rifle, and Mick secretly follows to keep her safe. Their first night in Kakadu is spent near Anbangbang Billabong, with the huge Burrungui plateau, once called Nourlangie Rock, behind them. The crew shot at the end of the dry season because crocodiles were less active. The crocodile attack itself was filmed at Girraween Lagoon near Darwin, so this billabong marks the camp, not the attack.

場所の精度: The film's first night is placed near this billabong, but the crocodile attack was shot at Girraween Lagoon, not here; the pin marks the billabong.

訪問のヒント: A marked 2.5 km circular walk circles the billabong, open in the dry season only; the Burrungui rock art is nearby.

  3. Mick and Sue's destination in the bush is "Echo Lake", where the pair swim and Mick spears a barramundi. In real life it is Gunlom Falls in the south of Kakadu National Park, known in the 1980s as the UDP Falls. The cascade changes with the seasons, from a roaring waterfall to a gentle trickle down the cliffs.. Once the outback chapters end, Sue invites Mick to come to New York.

  4. Sue invites Mick to return with her to New York City on the pretext of wrapping up the story. After his first ever flight, Dundee touches down at Newark Liberty International Airport, in New Jersey. The production spent a further six weeks filming in New York, and the airport scenes were part of that shoot. Newark is one of the international airports serving the New York area, so the bushman's arrival was filmed in New Jersey.

  5. Mick is put up, with no expense spared, at the Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue at 59th Street. His suite, where he discovers what a bidet is, was built in a studio. The present building replaced an earlier hotel in 1905-1907, and it faces Central Park South at 768 Fifth Avenue. At the end of the film Mick checks out and tells the doorman, Irving, that he is going on walkabout around the United States.

  6. After an evening out, Mick asks the cab driver to take him to the nearest bar. It is by no means the nearest, but the film sends him all the way down to the East Village, to the 7B Horseshoe Bar, formerly known as PH Vazac's, at 108 Avenue B and Seventh Street. The bar sits at the southeast corner of Tompkins Square Park. It is the bar where Mick meets a man in drag.

  7. When Sue and Mick come up from Chambers Street subway station, an attempted mugging follows, and Mick sees it off. His New York days also bring a run-in with a pimp, but this stop is the mugging. The station entrance is beneath the white-tiled arches of the South Arcade under the Municipal Building, a 40-story, 580-foot tower at 1 Centre Street, east of Chambers Street.

  8. In the finale Mick heads west on Central Park South to Columbus Circle, the traffic circle at the southwest corner of Central Park, to find a subway. Sue runs after him and, unable to reach him through the crowd on the platform, has the onlookers relay her message to him. Mick then walks to her on the heads and raised hands of the crowd. The platform itself was shot elsewhere: the disused lower level of the 9th Avenue subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

場所の精度: The story places the finale at Columbus Circle, but the platform was filmed in a disused Brooklyn station; the pin marks the circle.

訪問のヒント: Columbus Circle is the traffic circle at the southwest corner of Central Park.

The Beach: From Bangkok to Maya Bay

Danny Boyle's The Beach (2000) follows a young backpacker from Bangkok's Khao San Road to a secret island beach, shot at Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Le, from Alex Garland's 1996 novel. The route runs from Khao San Road through Ko Samui, a Khao Yai waterfall and Maya Bay to Ko Pha Ngan. Several stops are stand-ins: hotel interiors were shot in Phuket, the waterfall jump in Khao Yai, and the island itself is invented.

Eat Pray Love: Rome, India and Bali

Eat Pray Love, the 2010 film of Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir, was shot around Piazza Navona in Rome, at a pizzeria in Naples, in Pataudi, India, and around Ubud and Padang Padang Beach in Bali. Julia Roberts plays Liz, who leaves a settled life for a year of travel: in the memoir, four months in Italy eating, three in India praying and the end of the year in Bali. This route follows those three legs through the places where the scenes were filmed. The memoir's ashram is unnamed, so the India stop marks only the town where the film shot it.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory: Munich to Nördlingen

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) was shot in Germany: Wonka's factory gates are a Munich gasworks, the Chocolate Room was built at Bavaria Studios, and the final flight over town is footage of Nördlingen. The route follows the film in story order, from Bill's Candy Shop and Charlie Bucket's street to the factory gates, the Chocolate River set and the glass Wonkavator. Some pins mark only a street, and the Chocolate Room was a studio set.
