Venice: From the Rialto to San Marco

A short walk from the Rialto Bridge to Piazza San Marco packs in Shylock's Rialto, a clock tower from a Bond film, the basilica that holds Saint Mark, Galileo's telescope demonstration and Casanova's roof-top escape from the Doge's Palace.

  1. The present stone bridge, a single span, was built from 1588 to 1591 to a design by Antonio da Ponte, and its engineering was thought so audacious that the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi predicted its ruin. Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice has Salanio open Act III with the question "What news on the Rialto?", and Robert Browning's poem "A Toccata of Galuppi's" calls it Shylock's bridge.

  2. Construction of the clock tower on the edge of the square started in 1496. On top, two bronze shepherds, 2.5 metres high, strike the great bell with hammers; they are known as the Moors. Venice has a cameo in the 1979 James Bond film Moonraker, where Bond throws a villain through the face of the clock. The film did not use the real clock.

  3. Medieval chronicles tell how two Venetian merchants removed Saint Mark's body from Alexandria in Egypt and brought it to Venice in 828 or 829. The present basilica, the third church on the site, was begun probably in 1063. Its four gilded bronze horses were early spoils brought from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade.

  4. On 21 August 1609 Galileo Galilei demonstrated his telescope from the belfry to the procurator Antonio Priuli and other nobles. The tower later fell: at 9:53 on 14 July 1902 the entire bell tower collapsed. The campanile standing today is a reconstruction completed in 1912, after the earlier tower collapsed in 1902.

  5. On 26 July 1755, aged 30, Giacomo Casanova was arrested for affront to religion and common decency and imprisoned under the Leads: seven cells on the top floor of the east wing of the Doge's Palace. With the help of Father Balbi he broke through the lead plates and onto the sloping roof, in swirling fog. In 1787 he wrote Story of My Flight. A corridor from the palace leads over the Bridge of Sighs.

  6. The white Istrian limestone bridge was built shortly after 1600 and connects the Doge's Palace with the New Prison across Rio di Palazzo. Its famous name dates from the Romantic period. The 1979 film A Little Romance features it heavily.

Florence: A Walk Through the Renaissance Centre

Florence's Renaissance is packed into a few streets: the Duomo and Brunelleschi's dome, the Medici palace, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio. Each stop here ties one building to a dated event, from a dome competition in 1418 to Michelangelo's David arriving at the Accademia in 1873. The walk follows the buildings in date order, from the cathedral to the Accademia, and every stop can be visited. Dates mark the event at each place, not a single journey.

St Petersburg: A Walk Along Nevsky and the Neva

St Petersburg's history can be walked in an afternoon: from the Peter and Paul Fortress, where the city was founded in 1703, past Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect to Senate Square, Palace Square and the cruiser Aurora on the Neva. Seven stops follow the city from its foundation through the Decembrist revolt of 1825, the assassination of Alexander II, Bloody Sunday in 1905 and the events of October 1917. The stops zigzag across the centre, so the pins are markers rather than a single line.

The Cuban Revolution: From Granma to Havana

The Cuban Revolution runs from the Moncada Barracks in Santiago to a Mexican port, a mangrove beach near Niquero, the Sierra Maestra, an armored train in Santa Clara and the old Presidential Palace in Havana. In December 1956 eighty-two men crowded onto the yacht Granma; only about twelve survived the ambush at Alegría de Pío. Two years later the rebels were in Havana. The route follows that arc in seven stops. Three of the pins are approximate, and two places have no pin.
