Call of Duty: Vanguard: Stalingrad to Berlin
Call of Duty: Vanguard is set in real wartime places: Tobruk, Midway, Stalingrad, El Alamein, the Merville Gun Battery in Normandy and Tempelhof Airport in Berlin.
The campaign jumps between years, so this route follows story dates from 1941 to 1945. Each stop pairs a mission with the real battlefield, with the pins marking the town or site rather than a mission map.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Call of Duty: Vanguard follows Lucas Riggs, an Australian Army demolitionist stationed at Tobruk with the Rats of Tobruk garrison. After a failed ambush, the Rats find intelligence on General Erwin Rommel and destroy an enemy depot. The nickname is real: the siege ran from 10 April to 27 November 1941, and its tenacious defenders were relieved after 231 days by the British Eighth Army.

Navy pilot Wade Jackson fights in the Battle of Midway with his tail gunner and destroys two Japanese aircraft carriers. The real battle of 4 June 1942 was far bigger: four Japanese fleet carriers, Akagi, Kaga, Hiryū and Sōryū, were sunk. The atoll that gave it its name has two main islands, Sand Island and Eastern Island, and is a habitat for millions of seabirds.

Red Army nurse Polina Petrova watches the Wehrmacht invade Stalingrad and fails to save her father Boris from being executed. She escapes and becomes a sniper, pursuing the invasion's commander. Stalingrad is now Volgograd, and Mamayev Kurgan, a hill and memorial complex overlooking the city, commemorates the battle. Its statue, The Motherland Calls, was the largest free-standing sculpture in the world when installed in 1967.

During the Second Battle of El Alamein, Riggs is ordered to hold a defensive line but disobeys and tries to retake a hill instead. He and his friend Des succeed, though Des is killed in action. The real battle ran from 23 October to 4 November 1942 near the railway halt of El Alamein, on the Mediterranean coast 106 kilometres west of Alexandria.

In Operation Tonga, Kingsley and the Parachute Regiment help destroy the Merville Gun Battery and several bridges ahead of the Allied invasion of Normandy. The battery was real, one of the first places attacked by Allied forces during the Normandy Landings. Its four 6-foot-thick, steel-reinforced concrete gun casemates stand on the site.

The final act is set in Berlin. Jackson is captured trying to steal a plane at Tempelhof Airport, and in the closing mission Vanguard pursues Freisinger through the city to Tempelhof. The airport closed on 30 October 2008. Its airfield opened in May 2010 as Berlin's largest public park, Tempelhofer Feld.
Visitor guidance: The former airfield is Tempelhofer Feld, a public park open for recreation.
