What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Keitum plays a big part in the early episodes of Nord Nord Mord, with chases through its lanes. In Clüvers Geheimnis (episode 3) a local luxury hotel is the central set, and the village returns in the later episode Sievers und das mörderische Türkis. Keitum also appears in the intro of episode 16. Many of the Keitum filming spots can still be found by visitors who explore the village on foot.

Location precision: Several spots in the village are used; the pin marks Keitum, not a single building.

Visitor guidance: Many of the filming spots in the village can be explored on foot.

  2. The episode Sievers und die letzte Beichte starts with a body found during a burial in the churchyard, and it shows many shots of the church of St. Martin in Morsum. The church stands a little apart from the village on a low hill in the marsh meadows. It was first mentioned in documents in 1240.

Visitor guidance: A working parish church; check opening times before going in.

  3. When a scene needs the beach, the production often goes to Westerland. In Sievers und der schwarze Engel (episode 15) the beach restaurant BeachHouse Sylt appears, and the Musikmuschel bandstand has also been a location. The promenade, the long sandy beach and the pedestrian zone turn up regularly in the series. Concerts and other events are held at the bandstand each year from May to October.

    Not pinned on the mapVisitable

Location precision: The sources name the Westerland promenade and its bandstand but no exact spot, and no reliable pin was found, so the stop is unpinned.

Visitor guidance: Events at the Musikmuschel bandstand run from May to October.

  4. Kampen's sights serve as the backdrop for the series: the Quermarkenfeuer at the end of the Red Cliff, the dune path on the Wadden Sea side and the beach access have all been used as locations. The Red Cliff is often seen in sunset scenes, and Kampen's thatched houses stand in as homes of various characters. The octagonal tower was built in 1912 and 1913 as a warning light for a sandbank at the entrance to the Lister Tief.

Visitor guidance: The lighthouse stands at the end of the Red Cliff in Kampen.

  5. Hörnum harbour appears often as a set, and the dunes and beaches have repeatedly been staged as places where a body is found. The south beach, with its tetrapod breakwaters, hosts the showdown of one recent episode. Hörnum lighthouse stands on a 16-metre dune above the village, and it can be visited, which makes it a good landmark for the southern scenes.

Location precision: The series films at Hörnum harbour, dunes and south beach; the pin marks the lighthouse as the village landmark.

Visitor guidance: The lighthouse can be visited.

  6. List is Germany's northernmost municipality, and the harbour plays a role in several episodes. ZDF films many harbour scenes here and all exterior shots of the police station, so the island's detectives work in List on screen. On screen, the island's detectives work out of List. The harbour itself is open to visitors, who can walk the quays where many of the series' harbour scenes are filmed.

Location precision: Sources do not name the building used for the police station exteriors; the pin marks the harbour.

Visitor guidance: The harbour is open to walk around.

Tatort Münster, the comic crime series with Detective Thiel and Professor Boerne, is set in Münster but filmed partly elsewhere. Since 2002 Axel Prahl and Jan Josef Liefers have played the odd couple of Münster's murder squad. Five stops follow the series from its first case, Der dunkle Fleck, to the zoo episode Schlangengrube in 2018. Some places are the real setting, others only stood in for it.

Das Boot: U-96 and La Rochelle

Das Boot (1981) is set in La Rochelle, at sea and in Vigo, but it was filmed at the La Pallice U-boat bunker in La Rochelle, on Lake Constance and in Bavaria's studios.
