The Banshees of Inisherin: Achill and Inishmore

In April 1923, with the Irish Civil War burning across the water, Colm Doherty stops speaking to his oldest friend, Pádraic Súilleabháin. The island of Inisherin is fictional, but the film was shot on two real ones: Inishmore, where Pádraic's cottage and the cliffs stand in for it, and Achill, where the pub, the shop, the lake and Colm's house were found.

Хронология и места

Что значат пометки у мест?
Вымышленное
Место существует только в истории; метка, если есть, стоит на реальном прототипе или источнике вдохновения.
  1. Pádraic shares this cottage with his sister Siobhán and keeps his pet donkey, Jenny. It is where Jenny chokes to death on one of Colm's severed fingers. The production built the cottage in a limestone-paved field above the village and dismantled it afterwards, so there is no building to visit. The site still has views over the village, with the fort of Dún Aonghasa on the skyline.

Точность места: Inisherin is fictional; the pin marks the Inis Mór village where Pádraic's cottage set was built.

  2. Pádraic and Dominic share a bottle of poitín on the cliff top, the same drink Dominic's father beats him for. The fort behind them is prehistoric: four concentric dry-stone walls on a cliff some hundred metres above the sea. It is a public archaeological site with a small museum, and the cliff edge is every bit as vertiginous as it looks. The film uses the fort as the edge of Inisherin.

Точность места: Inisherin's cliffs are fictional; the pin marks Dún Aonghasa, the real fort used for the cliff scenes.

Советы для посещения: A public archaeological site with a small museum; the cliff edge is exposed, so keep back from the drop.

  3. The lanes around Bungabhla stand in for the roads of Inisherin, where Pádraic and Colm keep crossing paths after Colm abruptly ends their friendship. Every meeting carries Colm's ultimatum: each time Pádraic speaks to him, Colm will cut off one of his own fingers. The village lies on Inis Mór, and there is no set to see: the roads themselves were the location.

  4. Mass is one of the film's communal scenes, and it was shot in Dugort's nineteenth-century Church of Ireland chapel. The building held about 130 people and served for both the exterior Mass scenes and some interiors. In the story it is the island's shared ritual, the place where the village gathers while the feud between Pádraic and Colm runs underneath. The church is still active, so visit for a service rather than as a set, and keep clear of the graves.

Советы для посещения: The church is active: visit for a service only, and respect the graves in the grounds.

  5. The production turned this harbour into Inisherin's village street, with O'Riordan's shop and post office and a row of cottage fronts. It is the film's small world of daily business, the place where Pádraic's errands and the village's news belong. The shop and cottages were built for the film and then removed; today there is little at Purteen beyond the dock.

Советы для посещения: The shop and cottages are gone; the dock and harbour remain.

  6. Mrs McCormick's cottage stands at the edge of this lake, and the film gives her some of its most ominous moments. It is also where Dominic, the garda's beaten son, awkwardly asks Siobhán if she might love him; she gently turns him down. The lake is a glacial corrie, one of Achill's most beautiful spots. The cottage is a real building used by the production, but the lake and its shore are the attraction: quiet water and bare hills.

  7. The pub is the heart of Inisherin and the stage for the quarrel: Colm plays his fiddle here, and Pádraic waits outside hoping to reconcile. None of it is real. The production built JJ Devine's from scratch at Cloughmore on the Atlantic Drive, then took it down; the site is on the coast road today. The set was shipped to the mainland and rebuilt as a working pub in Kilkerrin, the one place where you can still stand inside it.

  8. The film's final scene is played on this beach, beside Colm's burnt-out house, after Pádraic has taken the dog Sammy out of the fire. Colm survives, and the two men talk about whether the Civil War is coming to an end. The cottage is a real private home, dressed for 1923 and closed to visitors. The beach is a Blue Flag strand that once hosted a basking shark fishery.

Perfect Days: Hirayama's Tokyo

Wim Wenders' Perfect Days follows Hirayama, a Tokyo toilet cleaner who keeps his days exactly the same: the same overalls, the same cassette tapes, the same sandwich under the trees. The city changes around him; he notices the light through the leaves. This route follows the film's real Tokyo, from the old apartment east of the Sumida to four of the Tokyo Toilet project's designer facilities, the shrine bench where he eats lunch, the sento and Asakusa bar that fill his evenings, and the bridge where the story ends.

The Last Kingdom: Uhtred's England

Uhtred of Bebbanburg is a Saxon boy raised by Danish Vikings, and The Last Kingdom follows him through the wars that made England. This route takes the places of the story in order, from the fortress on the Northumberland coast to the marshes of Somerset, the field at Ethandun and the last battle at Brunanburh, setting each against what history records. The television series adapts Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories; where a stop follows a particular novel or series, the point says so. The show was filmed mainly in Hungary, so the places below are the real settings of the events, not the filming locations.

Babylon Berlin: Weimar Berlin, 1929–1933

Gereon Rath arrives from Cologne in 1929 to a Berlin of police headquarters, cabarets and armed conspiracies. The series follows him and Charlotte Ritter from the May Day riots through the fall of the Weimar Republic to Hitler's first weeks in power, mixing real streets with sets and stand-ins. This route visits the places the story names and the buildings that played them: the Rotes Rathaus as the police headquarters, the real Moka Efti, the Anhalter goods yard, the Hermannplatz U-Bahn, a Duisburg steelworks, the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, Schloss Drachenburg and the Volksbühne. Some stops are exact; others are stand-ins far from Berlin.
