Хронология и места

Что значат пометки у мест?
Точное
Метка стоит там, где всё произошло или снималось на самом деле.
Вымышленное
Место существует только в истории; метка, если есть, стоит на реальном прототипе или источнике вдохновения.
  1. The story starts at Pencey Preparatory Academy, a boarding school in Pennsylvania. Holden Caulfield has just been expelled for failing every class except English, and he decides to leave early and take a train to New York City. He means to stay away from home until Wednesday. Pencey is invented, but Salinger may have modelled it on Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, where he studied. The pin marks that real school.

Точность места: Pencey is fictional; the pin marks Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, which Salinger may have used as the model.

  2. Disillusioned, Holden spends the night at Grand Central Terminal and decides he wants to run away. It is the low point of his trip. The terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue opened in 1913 and has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world, so there was plenty of floor for a runaway to wait out the night.

  3. Holden arranges to meet his younger sister Phoebe at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to say goodbye. She turns up wanting to go with him. Holden refuses, and Phoebe is upset. The museum's main building stands at 1000 Fifth Avenue on Museum Mile, along the eastern edge of Central Park, so the park where the story ends is a short walk away.

  4. To cheer Phoebe up, Holden takes her to the Central Park Zoo. The zoo is at East 64th Street and Fifth Avenue, in the southeast corner of the park, and in its present form it opened on December 2, 1934. From here the two go on to the carousel.

  5. Holden buys Phoebe a ticket for the carousel. It starts to rain, but the sight of her riding it makes him happy, which is the closing image of his story. The carousel Salinger wrote about burned down in 1950; the one standing today was relocated to Central Park in 1951 and has 57 hand-carved horses. Its old brass ring for riders to grab was not replaced.

The Chronicles of Narnia: From Belfast and Oxford to the Film Sets

The Chronicles of Narnia began in C. S. Lewis's Belfast and Oxford, and the films were shot in New Zealand, Slovenia and Queensland. This route runs from the Digory statue at the Holywood Arches to The Kilns, the Eagle and Child pub, Elephant Rocks, Bovec and Cleveland Point. Three stops follow the author: his birthplace, the Oxford house where he wrote every Narnia book, and the pub where he handed round the proofs of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Three follow the cameras, one for each film. Film sites are marked as the places where scenes were shot, not as Narnia itself.

Thomas Hardy's Wessex: Dorset to Stonehenge

Thomas Hardy's Wessex is the real Dorset and Wiltshire under invented names: Puddletown becomes Weatherbury, Bere Regis becomes Kingsbere, and Stonehenge keeps its own name in Tess of the d'Urbervilles. The route starts at Hardy's birthplace cottage and his house Max Gate, then follows his novels to the real villages and ancient sites behind them: Puddletown, Maiden Castle, Bere Regis and finally Stonehenge. Hardy himself called Wessex a "partly real, partly dream-country", so some pins mark the area rather than one building.

Walden: Thoreau's Concord and Walden Pond

Walden is set at Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts, where Henry David Thoreau lived from July 1845 to September 1847. This route follows the book from his cabin site to the railroad, Concord's jail, Flint's Pond, Baker Farm and Brister's Hill. Thoreau compressed his two years into a single calendar year in the book. The stops follow the order of its chapters, and most of the paths and ponds can still be walked around Walden Pond State Reservation. Several spots in the woods are only approximately placed on the map.
