Commissaire Dupin: Bannalec's Brittany Crime Novels

Commissaire Dupin is set in Brittany: Jean-Luc Bannalec's detective, a Paris policeman transferred to Concarneau, solves murders in Pont-Aven, on the Glénan islands and in the Guérande salt marshes. This route follows the first three novels, Bretonische Verhältnisse, Bretonische Brandung and Bretonisches Gold, then looks at how the TV series borrows other places such as Saint-Malo. Settings in the story are partly invented.

The Red and the Black: Verrières to Besançon

The Red and the Black is set in Franche-Comté: Julien Sorel grows up in the fictional town of Verrières, studies at the seminary in Besançon, and meets his end after a church shooting based on a real 1827 crime near Grenoble. The route follows Julien from Verrières-de-Joux, the village that may have lent its name, through Besançon's citadel, seminary and cathedral, to Brangues and Place Grenette, where the real Antoine Berthet who inspired the novel was tried and executed.

Matsumoto Seichō: Points and Lines and Castle of Sand

Points and Lines is set between Tokyo Station and the beach at Kashii in Fukuoka, while Castle of Sand follows a detective from the Kamata rail yard in Tokyo to Akita and Shimane. Seichō Matsumoto's two best-known crime novels turn Japan's railways into the clues. This route follows both stories: the four-minute gap on Tokyo Station's platforms, the Kashii shore, and the stations named Kameda that lead the detective to Kamedake. Pins at Kashii and Kamata are approximate.

Inspector Morse: An Oxford Trail

Inspector Morse is set and filmed in Oxford, from the Randolph Hotel and the Ashmolean Museum to the Bodleian Library and Exeter College, where the detective's final episode was shot. This route follows six places tied to the detective, from his student past to his last case.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Larsson's Stockholm

Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy is a Stockholm novel before it is a thriller: journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander live, drink and work on Södermalm, the island district where much of the action takes place. This route walks the real addresses behind the books, from Blomkvist's home on Bellmansgatan to Lisbeth's penthouse on Fiskargatan, and ends at the City Museum that runs the official tour. Some addresses are private homes, so most are seen from the street.

The Twelve Chairs: Bender's Road to the Caucasus

The Twelve Chairs crosses the Soviet Union: Moscow's Prague restaurant, the Proval cave in Pyatigorsk, the Darial Gorge and Yalta. A former nobleman and a con man chase twelve dining chairs; Syzran and Kozmodemyansk are candidate models for the invented Stargorod and Vasyuki. The route marks six stops; Stargorod and Vasyuki are invented, so their pins are only candidate stand-ins.

Crime and Punishment: Raskolnikov's St Petersburg

Raskolnikov's St Petersburg on a map: his garret, the pawnbroker's house, Sennaya Square, the canal and the bridges of the Neva. On an exceptionally hot July evening he counts exactly 730 steps to her door, and Dostoevsky hid many addresses behind initials such as "S. Place" and "K. bridge". This route follows Raskolnikov and Svidrigailov from the garret to the police office. The garret, the pawnbroker's house and the police office are researchers' identifications rather than facts, and are marked as such.

Murder on the Orient Express: From Aleppo to the Snowdrift

Murder on the Orient Express runs from Aleppo through Istanbul and Belgrade to a snowdrift near Vinkovci. Poirot's train is stuck there with a murdered man aboard and the killer still on it. The route follows the story from Aleppo station through Istanbul, where Poirot gets his telegram and his berth, and Belgrade to the snowdrift near Vinkovci. It ends with the 1932 kidnapping that gave Christie her plot. Most pins are indicative: the novel names few exact places.
