Spartacus: The Slave Revolt of 73–71 BC

The Spartacus revolt began at a gladiator school in Capua, climbed Mount Vesuvius, ran south to the Strait of Messina and ended on the Sele River in 71 BC. It was the Third Servile War, the largest slave uprising Rome ever faced. The route follows the rebellion in order: the breakout of 73 BC, the siege on Vesuvius, the failed attempt to cross to Sicily, the last battle against Crassus and the crucifixions along the Appian Way. Ancient sources were written a century or more later and disagree in places, so the exact spots of the school and the battlefield are approximate.

Alice in Wonderland: Oxford and Christ Church

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland grew out of Oxford: Lewis Carroll wrote it as a Christ Church mathematician for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the college's Dean, and the story began on a boat trip from Folly Bridge to Godstow. The route runs from Christ Church Cathedral, where Carroll met the Liddells in 1856, through Christ Church, the river, the Botanic Garden and the Natural History Museum's dodo to the St Aldate's shop that became the Old Sheep Shop. Most places can still be visited. Links between scenes and places are readings, not Carroll's own statements.

East of Eden: The Salinas Valley

East of Eden is set in California's Salinas Valley, mostly between the start of the twentieth century and the end of World War I, and its places are Salinas, King City and the farmland between them. The 1955 James Dean film moved the story to Monterey on screen but was shot largely in Mendocino, with scenes in Spreckels and the valley. This route follows John Steinbeck's novel through the valley, Kate's town of Salinas and the film's locations, so you can see where the story and the screen version happen.

Seventeen Moments of Spring is set in Berlin and Bern in 1945, but it was filmed mostly elsewhere: Arkhangelskoye-Tyurikovo park and Butyrka prison in Moscow, Jauniela in Old Riga, and the Saxon towns of Hohnstein and Meissen, plus the Berlin inn Zur letzten Instanz. The route follows these real sites in the order of the Soviet spy series, from the Bavarian forest to Bern's Flower Street, and shows how Moscow and Riga stood in for wartime Germany and Switzerland.

Sirāt (2025): Filming Locations in Morocco and Spain

Sirāt, Óliver Laxe's 2025 road film, is set in southern Morocco but opens at a Spanish rave: the Rambla de Barrachina near Teruel stands in for the desert, while the mountain road, the white sand and the train were shot near Errachidia and Erfoud. The route follows the father Luis and his son Esteban as they chase a missing daughter and join a convoy of ravers. Each stop is a place in the film's region, not a precise pin: the director names the area, rarely the exact spot.

La bola negra (The Black Ball), the 2026 film by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, was shot in Granada, Sierra Nevada, Castil de Carrias, Sigüenza, Madrid, Athens and Comillas. Boyz n the Hood: South Central Los Angeles Filming Locations

Boyz n the Hood was filmed in the South Central Los Angeles neighbourhoods where director John Singleton grew up: Inglewood's Woodworth Avenue, Cimarron Street in Park Mesa Heights, and Crenshaw Boulevard. The route covers six stops, from the school and the Styles house to Crenshaw High School and the boulevard's restaurant. Several stops are private homes, so check the pin precision.

Five stops follow Charles and his friends through the 1994 film in story order, from a Somerset wedding that was actually filmed in Hertfordshire to the Islington street where the story ends. Carrie's wedding is not on the route because the sources do not name where it was shot.

Pins mark the sites on the town's own film trail, and the private homes on that trail are left out.

Three stops follow the author: his birthplace, the Oxford house where he wrote every Narnia book, and the pub where he handed round the proofs of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Thomas Hardy's Wessex: Dorset to Stonehenge

Thomas Hardy's Wessex is the real Dorset and Wiltshire under invented names: Puddletown becomes Weatherbury, Bere Regis becomes Kingsbere, and Stonehenge keeps its own name in Tess of the d'Urbervilles. The route starts at Hardy's birthplace cottage and his house Max Gate, then follows his novels to the real villages and ancient sites behind them: Puddletown, Maiden Castle, Bere Regis and finally Stonehenge. Hardy himself called Wessex a "partly real, partly dream-country", so some pins mark the area rather than one building.
