Four Weddings and a Funeral: Filming Locations in England
Four Weddings and a Funeral was shot mainly in London and the Home Counties: the first wedding in the Hertfordshire village of Sarratt, the second reception at Luton Hoo, the funeral at St Clement's in West Thurrock, Essex, and the fourth wedding at St Bartholomew-the-Great in the City of London.
Five stops follow Charles and his friends through the 1994 film in story order, from a Somerset wedding that was actually filmed in Hertfordshire to the Islington street where the story ends. Carrie's wedding is not on the route because the sources do not name where it was shot.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The film opens with Charles and Scarlett barely making it in time for the wedding of Angus and Laura, set in Somerset, where Charles is best man. The scene was filmed in the village of Sarratt in Hertfordshire, about four miles north of Rickmansworth. It is also where Charles meets Carrie, an American who used to work in England, at the reception, and the two spend the night together. The pin marks the village; the sources do not name the exact church or hall.

Three months later Bernard and Lydia get married in London, and the reception was filmed at Luton Hoo, an English country house and estate near Luton in Bedfordshire. Here Charles meets Carrie again and is devastated to learn that she is now engaged to Hamish, a wealthy Scottish man. The estate belonged to the de Hoo family until the 1450s, and later appeared in many other films.

At Carrie's wedding reception Gareth has a heart attack and dies. At his funeral Matthew expresses his grief by reciting W. H. Auden's "Funeral Blues". St Clement's Church, a Grade I listed building in West Thurrock, Essex, provided both the interior and exterior. Shots of guests arriving were filmed overlooking the River Thames, with the Dartford River Crossing behind them.

On his wedding day Charles is to marry Henrietta, though Carrie has just told him she and Hamish have separated. As the ceremony begins, David interrupts using sign language, with Charles as his interpreter, to say the groom loves someone else. Charles confirms it and a furious Henrietta punches him. The church in Smithfield, City of London, was founded as an Augustinian priory in 1123 and was the location for this fourth wedding service.

Back at Charles's flat, Carrie arrives to apologise for coming to the church. Charles renews his declaration of love and proposes a lifelong commitment without marriage, which Carrie accepts. The final moments were filmed in Islington on Highbury Terrace. The pin marks the street, since the sources do not give a house number.
