Kumano Kodō: To the Three Grand Shrines

For over a thousand years, emperors, samurai and ordinary people have walked mountain trails to three shrines of the ancient syncretic Kumano religion. Emperor Go-Shirakawa alone made the trip 34 times, and in the Muromachi period the stream of walkers was called a "pilgrimage of ants". This route follows the Nakahechi from Takijiri-oji through Chikatsuyu and Hongū, by river to Shingū, then to Nachi's stone steps and waterfall. Some stops are pinned to the area rather than a surveyed spot.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident: Sverdlovsk to Kholat Syakhl

Contains accounts of deaths in extreme cold. In January 1959 a group of ten experienced hikers from the Ural Polytechnical Institute set out on a ski trek into the northern Urals. Nine never came back: they cut their way out of their tent on a mountain slope one February night and died in the snow, and the cause is still discussed. This route follows the group from the institute in Sverdlovsk by train and lorry to the last village, then up to the mountain and the pass now named after them, and ends with the survivor's memorial. It sticks to the record; the explanations are left to the reader. The exact tent site is approximate.

Wild: Mojave to the Bridge of the Gods

In June 1995 Cheryl Strayed, 26 and with no hiking experience, set out alone to walk 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. Her memoir Wild reached No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list, and Reese Witherspoon played her in the 2014 film. This route follows the hike north from the Mojave Desert to the Columbia River, using the memoir's outline and the film's best-known scenes. The film compresses and dramatises, so stops drawn from it say so, and pins mark areas rather than campsites.

Ghost of Yōtei: Ezo in 1603

Ghost of Yōtei follows Atsu, a wandering mercenary who returns to Ezo — modern-day Hokkaido — in 1603 to hunt down the Yōtei Six, the band led by the samurai lord Nariaki Saito who slaughtered her family sixteen years earlier. Her revenge carries her across an island modelled on Hokkaido, from the grasslands at Mount Yōtei's foot to the frozen north and the Matsumae clan's castle in the south. This route follows the game's regions and their real counterparts: the Yotei Grasslands around Lake Shikotsu, the Ishikari Plain, the Ainu country of the Nayoro Wilds, the Kitsune's Teshio Ridge, and the Tokachi Range, with Mount Yōtei and Matsumae Castle as its fixed points.

Dune: The Deserts Behind Arrakis

The Dune films are a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel. Paul Atreides travels from Caladan to the desert planet Arrakis, the harsh sole source of spice, and finally forces Emperor Shaddam to come to Arrakis with Irulan and his Sardaukar soldiers. Villeneuve filmed it all in real places: the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi, a Norwegian peninsula, a Budapest studio and an Italian tomb. This route links the five key locations: Stadlandet standing in for Caladan, Wadi Rum and the Liwa Oasis sharing Arrakis, Origo Studios staging Arrakeen and the ornithopters, and the Brion tomb doubling as the imperial court. Part One shot from March to July 2019 in Hungary, Jordan, Norway and the Emirates; Part Two followed from July to December 2022, adding Italy and Namibia to the itinerary.

Every stop is a real place you can visit, recreated in the game's vast open world.

The Odyssey of Christopher McCandless

In 1990 Christopher McCandless graduated from Emory University, gave his savings to charity and vanished from his family's life. For two years he drifted across America under the name "Alexander Supertramp" — working odd jobs, living in camps, paddling a canoe down the Colorado River into Mexico. In April 1992 he hitchhiked to Alaska and walked into the bush with very little food. He died there that summer, aged 24. Jon Krakauer told his story in the book Into the Wild (1996), filmed by Sean Penn in 2007. The route follows his documented trail. The Stampede Trail is dangerous, and this route is not an invitation to retrace the last part of it.

On the Road: Kerouac's American Journey

Between 1947 and 1950 Sal Paradise, a young writer from New Jersey, crosses America again and again — hitchhiking, by bus and in borrowed cars — usually in pursuit of his wild, magnetic friend Dean Moriarty. Jack Kerouac typed the story on a continuous scroll of paper in three weeks in April 1951, and it was published in 1957. Sal is Kerouac, Dean is Neal Cassady, and most of the trips really happened. The route picks out the places the novel names, from a rainy false start on the Hudson to Mexico City and back to a New York street corner. The novel gives towns and streets rather than addresses, so most pins mark areas, not doors.
