Carlos Castaneda: From Cajamarca to Don Juan's Mexico

From 1968 Carlos Castaneda published best-sellers about his apprenticeship to don Juan Matus, a Yaqui sorcerer from Sonora: peyote, power, and finally a leap into an abyss. They came out as anthropology and earned him UCLA degrees. Most scholars now read them as fiction, and the author reinvented his own life story too. This route follows two maps at once. One holds the places the records confirm: Cajamarca, Lima, UCLA and Westwood. The other holds the places the books name, from a Greyhound depot in Nogales to a bench in Oaxaca and the Toltec warriors of Tula. Each stop's accuracy label tells you which map it belongs to.

The Odyssey of Christopher McCandless

In 1990 Christopher McCandless graduated from Emory University, gave his savings to charity and vanished from his family's life. For two years he drifted across America under the name "Alexander Supertramp" — working odd jobs, living in camps, paddling a canoe down the Colorado River into Mexico. In April 1992 he hitchhiked to Alaska and walked into the bush with very little food. He died there that summer, aged 24. Jon Krakauer told his story in the book Into the Wild (1996), filmed by Sean Penn in 2007. The route follows his documented trail. The Stampede Trail is dangerous, and this route is not an invitation to retrace the last part of it.
