Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo in Sumida

Paranormasight is set in 1980s Sumida, Tokyo, and built on the Honjo Seven Mysteries, Edo-era ghost stories tied to real spots such as Kinshibori Park, the Former Yasuda Garden and Ryogoku. The 2023 Square Enix game turns the legends into cursed beads passed to its characters. The route follows its opening scene and the legends' old sites. The exact sites of the old stories are uncertain, so several pins mark the neighbourhood.

Perfect Days: Hirayama's Tokyo

Wim Wenders' Perfect Days follows Hirayama, a Tokyo toilet cleaner who keeps his days exactly the same: the same overalls, the same cassette tapes, the same sandwich under the trees. The city changes around him; he notices the light through the leaves. This route follows the film's real Tokyo, from the old apartment east of the Sumida to four of the Tokyo Toilet project's designer facilities, the shrine bench where he eats lunch, the sento and Asakusa bar that fill his evenings, and the bridge where the story ends.

Bashō's Narrow Road to the Deep North

In spring 1689 the poet Matsuo Bashō gave up his hut in Edo and set off on foot with his friend and disciple Kawai Sora into Oku, the remote north of Japan. For about 156 days and some 2,400 kilometres they walked to the places the old poets had made famous — a barrier gate, a bay of pine islands, a battlefield, a mountain temple — and Bashō answered them with haiku. The travel diary he made of it, Oku no Hosomichi, published in 1702, is one of the classics of Japanese literature, and its stops are still pilgrimage sites. Bashō polished the facts for art; Sora's own diary shows where. Dates follow the old lunar calendar, so they are given here by season.
