The Adventures of Tintin: Hergé's Brussels

Tintin's Brussels is the Marolles flea market where he buys the Unicorn, the Etterbeek street where Hergé was born, and the museums that keep his work: the Belgian Comic Strip Center, the Hergé Museum in Louvain-la-Neuve and the Moon rocket at Brussels Airport. Hergé was born in Brussels, and the city shows up in his books and in the places that celebrate them. This route follows five real places from his birth in 1907 to the Tintin sights you can visit today. The Unicorn flea-market scene is set in the Marolles; other stops are Tintin landmarks rather than story scenes.

Ulysses: One Day in Dublin

James Joyce's Ulysses is one ordinary day, 16 June 1904, in Dublin, told in eighteen episodes through Leopold Bloom, a Jewish advertisement canvasser, and Stephen Dedalus, who starts the day in a tower by the sea. This route walks the day in the order the novel runs it: from the Martello tower at Sandycove where it opens to Howth Head, where Molly Bloom's memory ends it with a yes. Almost every stop is a place you can still stand in: the tower where Joyce stayed in 1904, the strand Stephen walks, the street of the chemist's where Bloom buys soap, the cemetery of the funeral, the pub where he eats his sandwich, the library where he passes between Stephen and Mulligan, the quay of the Ormond Hotel and the maternity hospital. The last stop is a recollection rather than a setting: the novel never says where on Howth Head the two of them lay.

The Revolutions of 1989: Gdańsk to Bucharest

In 1989 communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe came apart in a few months — through round-table talks in Poland, a picnic on the Hungarian border, candlelit marches in Leipzig, a muddled press conference in Berlin, students in Prague and a bloody uprising in Romania. Each country had its own causes, but every crack made the next one easier. The route visits the exact places where it happened, most of them marked today by a memorial, a museum or a plaque: the shipyard gate where Solidarity was born, the palace of the Round Table, the old border road near Sopron, the church in Leipzig, the bridge at Bornholmer Straße, a street corner in Prague, a pastor's flat in Timișoara and the balcony in Bucharest.
