Der Bergdoktor: Ellmau and the Wilder Kaiser
Der Bergdoktor is filmed in Tyrol, in the villages of Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll below the Wilder Kaiser mountains, plus the hospital in Schwaz.
The doctor series follows Dr. Martin Gruber through a mountain village. The route walks the real places behind it: the practice farm, the family farm, the village inn, the lake, the studio clinic and the hospital that stands in for Klinik Hall. Visiting seasons vary.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Dr. Martin Gruber, played by Hans Sigl, treats his patients in the mountain practice, and in real life it is the Hinterschnabl farm in Ellmau. Ellmau has been the series' central setting since 2008, though within the story the practice is said to be in Faistenbichl. Cameras began rolling on 31 July 2007, for what were first eight planned episodes. The farm can be visited between May and October.
Visitor guidance: Open to visitors between May and October.

The doctor's family home, the Gruberhof, is the Köpfinghof on the Bromberg near Söll. Unlike most film sets it is not a set at all: the farm is still worked in real life. It is open to visitors in summer.
Not pinned on the mapVisitableLocation precision: The farm lies on the Bromberg above Söll; the sources give no exact spot, so it is not pinned.
Visitor guidance: Still a working farm; visits are possible in summer.

The village inn "Wilder Kaiser" is fictional, but its exterior is real: the former village shop on Going's village square. Going's church square also appears in the series. The interiors are shot elsewhere, in the Föhrenhof restaurant in Ellmau.
Visitor guidance: The church square in Going is a public village space; the inn itself is a set.

This alpine lake in the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve, in the municipality of Scheffau, serves as the backdrop for numerous scenes. It lies at 882 metres and is fed by clear underground springs. There is a public beach, and a walk around the shore takes about an hour past several snack stations.
Visitor guidance: Public beach and a roughly one-hour circuit walk around the lake.

The hospital rooms of the series are built in a studio in the back half of the Kaiserbad tennis hall in Ellmau: intensive care, patient rooms, ward corridor and doctor's office, all since 2013. In the story the doctor makes quick visits to the Hall clinic, but in reality Hall is about an hour's drive from Ellmau.
Location precision: The studio sits inside the tennis hall; the pin marks the Kaiserbad site.

The setting for the series' "Klinik Hall" is the district hospital in Schwaz, about 50 km west of the main filming villages in Ellmau and Going. The town of Hall in Tirol, which the name suggests, is not where it is shot.
