Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Stars Hollow began as a holiday. Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino stayed at the Mayflower Inn in Washington, Connecticut, and wanted viewers to feel the same warmth she felt walking around what she called a fairy town. That trip shaped both the town and Lorelai's workplace, the Independence Inn. Writers also borrowed from West Hartford and New Milford, so Stars Hollow is a blend of Connecticut towns rather than one real place.

Location precision: Stars Hollow is a blend of several Connecticut towns; the pin marks the village of Washington, where the idea began.

  2. The first episode was not shot in Connecticut at all. The pilot was filmed in Unionville, a Toronto suburb, and its main street played Stars Hollow through season 1. Unionville is now a heritage conservation district, so the old village streets that gave the show its small-town look are still intact. Fans can walk the same main street.

Visitor guidance: Main Street Unionville is a public, walkable village street with shops and cafes.

  3. For the rest of the series, Stars Hollow was built on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Exteriors, Luke's Diner and Miss Patty's dance studio stood on the backlot, filled with background actors to look like a town. Its centre is a park with a gazebo, where Lorelai and Luke marry in A Year in the Life. The square sat just around the corner from the hospital set used in ER.

Location precision: Stars Hollow exists only as a set; the pin marks the Warner Bros. Studios lot where it stood.

Visitor guidance: The lot is a working studio, so check access first.

  4. The first frame of the opening credits shows a panoramic view of South Royalton, Vermont, not Connecticut. The village had 654 residents in 2020. The title-card view can be seen from northbound Interstate 89.

Location precision: The credits show a hillside view over the village; the pin marks South Royalton itself.

Visitor guidance: The view is described from the northbound lanes of I-89; do not stop on the highway.

  5. Rory's strict prep school, Chilton, is Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Lorelai needs her parents' help to pay Chilton's tuition, which sets up the family dinners. The Tudor Revival house was completed in 1928, bought by the City of Beverly Hills in 1965 and opened as a public park six years later. Its grounds are open, which is why it appears in so many productions.

Visitor guidance: The grounds are a public park; check opening hours and filming closures before you go.

  6. Rory dreams of Harvard but finally chooses Yale, her grandfather's alma mater. The show's first Yale visit was filmed not at Yale but at Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Visitor guidance: Pomona is a working college campus in Claremont; stay on public paths.
