What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. In the film, Harry is blocked from entering Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at King's Cross: Dobby has closed the barrier. Harry and Ron fly Mr Weasley's car, built from a 1962 Ford Anglia, to Hogwarts instead. King's Cross was the filming location for the platform, though neighbouring St Pancras station was used for the exterior shots.

  2. Harry and Ron's flying car reaches Hogwarts and crashes into the Whomping Willow. Alnwick Castle in Northumberland was a stand-in for both the exterior and the interior of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, and it appears in Chamber of Secrets (2002).

Visitor guidance: The castle is open to the public throughout the summer.

  3. Some interior sequences of Chamber of Secrets were filmed at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, including the cloister walk where Harry comes out of Professor Lockhart's room after serving detention and hears the basilisk, a giant serpent that kills people who make direct eye contact. The abbey is a Grade I listed building owned by the National Trust.

  4. In the story, the caretaker's cat Mrs Norris is found petrified with a message written in blood. Gloucester Cathedral was used as a setting for Hogwarts School in the film, and it appears in the first, second and sixth Harry Potter films. Its cloisters, rebuilt in the 14th century, display the earliest surviving example of structural fan vaulting.

Location precision: Sources name the cathedral as a Hogwarts setting but not which scenes were shot here; the pin marks the cathedral.

  5. In the story, Harry's arm is broken by a rogue Bludger in a Quidditch match, and while he recovers Dobby visits him. In the first two films the Divinity School of Oxford's Bodleian Library doubles as the Hogwarts hospital wing, and Duke Humfrey's Library stands in for the Hogwarts library.

  6. As more students are petrified, Harry is suspected of being the heir of Slytherin after communicating with a snake. Durham Cathedral is another real building used for Hogwarts, alongside Gloucester Cathedral, and it appears in the first two Harry Potter films. It has doubled as a number of fantasy locations in larger-budget productions.

Gone Girl: Filming Locations in Cape Girardeau

Gone Girl is set in the made-up town of North Carthage, Missouri, but David Fincher shot it almost entirely in Cape Girardeau: The Bar on Themis Street, the Common Pleas Courthouse, the old federal building and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge over the Mississippi. The route follows Nick Dunne's first days as the husband of a missing woman, from the bar to the press conference, the vigil, the police station and the bridge. One stop, the Drury Lodge, is marked approximately: it has closed and the pin sits on its street.

Zodiac: Bay Area Killings and Fincher's Film

Zodiac (2007) is set around the San Francisco Bay Area, from Vallejo and Lake Berryessa to Presidio Heights and the San Francisco Chronicle. The film follows the real Zodiac Killer case. This route walks five places from the film in story order, from the July 1969 attack at Blue Rock Springs Park to the police hunt. Several scenes were shot in Los Angeles, which is noted where it matters.
