Shetland: Jimmy Perez's Islands
The BBC crime drama Shetland, based on Ann Cleeves's novels, is filmed around Lerwick, Sumburgh Head, Busta and the Eshaness cliffs, with Jimmy Perez's home on the Lerwick waterfront.
This route follows six filming locations from the town to the north-west coast, with the scenes shot at each. Several stand in for fictional places, and the pins mark the real buildings and coast used on screen.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
- Fictional
- The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
Jimmy Perez lives in the Lodberrie, a house on the foreshore of South Commercial Street with its foundations built into the sea. The BBC's Shetland, based on the novels of Ann Cleeves, was first broadcast on 10 March 2013. Next door is Bain's Beach, and Lerwick's Commercial Street has featured in every series. Be aware that the house itself is a private residence, so look from the street and the shore.
Visitor guidance: The house is private; view it from the foreshore and Commercial Street in Lerwick.

Location precision: Skellwick exists only in the story; the pin marks Busta House Hotel, the building used on screen.
Visitor guidance: A working hotel at Busta, Shetland.

Burland Croft was one of the central filming locations of series two. On screen it is the fictional home of Evie Henderson and her husband, John. The croft's adjoining workshop is used today as a boatbuilding shed to construct traditional wooden boats, just as in the show.
Not pinned on the mapVisitability not confirmedLocation precision: Evie and John's home exists only in the story; the croft is on Trondra, but no exact pin is given here.

At the southern tip of Shetland's Mainland, the lighthouse and its associated buildings were used as a fictional hotel. From here it is possible to see Fair Isle on a clear day, the island Jimmy Perez is said to come from. The lighthouse was built by engineer Robert Stevenson, and the area is now a nature reserve of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
Visitor guidance: Open as a nature reserve at the southern tip of the Mainland.

The rugged cliffs of Eshaness are used as the fictional Pit of Biddista from the books. In series seven this is where Connor's moped turns up, prompting a search of the area for his body. The power of the Atlantic storms is displayed at the Grind o Da Navir, just north of Esha Ness Lighthouse, commissioned in 1929.
Location precision: The show films along the whole north-west coast; the pin is the Eshaness peninsula, not one spot.
Visitor guidance: Keep a safe distance from the cliff edge.
