Sirāt (2025): Filming Locations in Morocco and Spain
Sirāt, Óliver Laxe's 2025 road film, is set in southern Morocco but opens at a Spanish rave: the Rambla de Barrachina near Teruel stands in for the desert, while the mountain road, the white sand and the train were shot near Errachidia and Erfoud.
The route follows the father Luis and his son Esteban as they chase a missing daughter and join a convoy of ravers. Each stop is a place in the film's region, not a precise pin: the director names the area, rarely the exact spot.

What do the location labels mean?
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The film begins with a rave in the desert of southern Morocco, where Luis and Esteban hope to find Mar, the missing daughter. It was actually shot in Spain, at the Rambla de Barrachina near Teruel. Laxe describes the red ground and "two symmetrical mountains, like God created it that way on purpose". The clay canyons, about 65 hectares of ochre relief, were chosen to pass for Morocco, because Spanish funding rules required part of the film to be shot in Spain.

Los Monegros was the first idea for the Spanish part of the shoot, before the crew settled on Barrachina. Areas such as Jubierre and Castejón de Monegros supplied open horizons and a desert look. On screen the story moves on after the rave: the small group of ravers breaks away in vans, and Luis, Esteban and their dog follow them south towards a place "close to Mauritania".

The cliff-edge tragedy was shot on the Tagounsta road, a mountain track the French Legion built in the 1920s while fighting Berber tribes. Laxe says it has no real logic, but it was wide enough for the production's trucks. In the story, the convoy frees a stuck van, and in the middle of the celebration Luis's van rolls backwards off a cliff with Esteban and the dog inside. The crew lived in tents on this road.

The final desert sequence was shot in the Haroun desert near Erfoud, which Laxe picked for its very white sand, "almost like salt". In the story, Jade asks the group to improvise one last rave with two loudspeakers, and the sand turns out to hide a minefield. The Moroccan shoot lasted about four weeks in summer 2024, mostly around Errachidia and Erfoud.

The film ends with the three survivors riding an ore train across the desert. It was a real train, rented for the shoot at Gara Medouar, and the producers say it was tricky to organise. Gara Medouar is a limestone massif rising about 50 metres above the desert, best known as the SPECTRE headquarters in the James Bond film Spectre (2015).
