Sonar Kella: Kolkata to the Golden Fortress
Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress) follows detective Feluda from Kolkata through Jaipur's Nahargarh Fort and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Fort, the real golden fortress where Satyajit Ray shot his 1974 film.
A boy who remembers a past life, two kidnappers and a detective cross the Rajasthan desert. The route follows the plot in five stops, from Kolkata to the climax at Jaisalmer, and two stops are approximate pins.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The Golden Fortress starts in Kolkata, capital of West Bengal. A schoolboy, Mukul, is said to remember events of his previous life and talks of living in a golden fortress. A parapsychologist offers to help, but two fraudsters plan to kidnap the boy to find the treasure. When their first attempt grabs the wrong Mukul, his father hires the private detective Pradosh Chandra Mitter, known as Feluda, to protect his son. The chase moves to Rajasthan.

In Jaipur the kidnappers push Dr. Hajra off a cliff at Nahargarh Fort, leaving him for dead. He survives the fall and starts to pursue them. The fort is a real filming location: Sonar Kella is one of the films with scenes shot here. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh built it mainly in 1734.
Visitor guidance: Nahargarh Fort stands above Jaipur; the film shot scenes here.

In Jodhpur, Feluda arrives at the Circuit House and meets Burman, taking him for Dr. Hajra. Little by little he grows suspicious of the other man, Bose, because of his clothes and accent. Then a small clue breaks the case: the guest register is signed Hazra, not Hajra, so the doctor is an impostor. Jodhpur is Rajasthan's second-largest city; the film names the Circuit House, but this route pins the city only.

In Jaisalmer they rush to the fort and find Burman searching for the treasure. Feluda tells him there never was any treasure, even if rebirth exists, and they return to Kolkata. The fort was built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal. The name Sonar Kella was popularised among tourists by Ray's film, and a large number of visitors from Bengal and around the world still come every year.
Visitor guidance: Jaisalmer Fort draws large numbers of visitors every year.
