  1. Kim Shin is a 939-year-old immortal and a decorated general of the Goryeo dynasty, framed as a traitor and killed by the young king he served. The sword that killed him stays lodged in his chest, and the drama's backstory is built on that betrayal. Its Goryeo palace scenes were shot at Naju Image Theme Park in Naju. The set stands in for the court that condemned him, and the stop comes first because the story starts with his death.

  2. Kim Shin takes Eun-tak into his house whenever she is in danger, and she ends up living there with him and the Grim Reaper. The grand residence is the former Unhyeongung Western House, now inside the Duksung Women's University campus in Jongno, Seoul. Its exterior is the one used for the goblin's home. Yanggwan Hall is closed to visitors today, so this stop is about the building's role in the story rather than a look inside.

  3. Eun-tak summons Kim Shin to this breakwater on Korea's east coast, and their fateful first meeting happens against the open sea. The breakwater has an eastern section about a kilometre long and a western one of 200 metres. It is open all year round, at 1609 Haean-ro in Gangneung, and fans still come to recreate the scene.

  4. The drama's red door in Petit-Champlain is a portal between South Korea and Quebec City. In reality it is the emergency exit of the Théâtre Petit Champlain on Rue du Petit-Champlain, a red door that fans now photograph. After the series aired it became one of Quebec City's best-known examples of television-induced tourism, and visitors still stop on the street to take its picture.

  5. Eun-tak posts a letter through the Château Frontenac's golden mailbox, and the hotel appears in the drama's opening credits. The mailbox scene has a real origin: during renovations the hotel found a postcard from a soldier writing to his fiancée in the Second World War, and the production wrote the story into the script. Visitors still search the lobby for the antique box.

Para el visitante: The lobby is open to visitors; the antique mailbox is the spot fans look for.

  6. The Tourny fountain faces Quebec's Parliament Building, and Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun shot a Goblin scene beside it during the October 2016 Quebec shoot. The fountain was inaugurated on this site in 2007, for the city's 400th anniversary the following year, and it has become one of Quebec City's favourite meeting points.

Para el visitante: A public square in front of the Parliament Building, open at all hours.

  7. Parc du Bastion-de-la-Reine stands in for the Yoo family cemetery, the drama's burial ground. The Quebec shoot took place in October 2016, and the park is one of the locations the production chose for the Quebec chapters. The story returns to Quebec at the end: Eun-tak comes back to the city, older, and the crew had to revisit every location a second time to shoot her with shorter hair.

Crash Landing on You: Switzerland and the Stand-In North

Yoon Se-ri, a South Korean chaebol heiress, is paragliding when a tornado carries her across the border into North Korea. Ri Jeong-hyeok hides her, and the two fall in love despite the division between their countries. The series' Switzerland is the real thing: a mountain pass, a lake pier, a gorge bridge and a cable-car station, all shot on location. The series was pieced together from stand-ins: a Jeju forest for the DMZ, a Chungju park for a South Korean reunion, and sets in Hoengseong and Chungju for the northern village. This route follows the story in episode order, from Se-ri's landing in a Jeju forest to the reunion above Grindelwald. Nothing was filmed in North Korea: the Pyongyang and Kaesong stations were played by Ulaanbaatar, and the DMZ scenes by several of Jeju's oreums.

Alice in Borderland: Shibuya, Empty and Overgrown

Alice in Borderland begins with three friends running through Shibuya and ends with Arisu and Usagi fighting for the city itself. Between those points the series empties Tokyo, then lets it grow over. This route follows the real Shibuya landmarks the characters use — the scramble crossing, the Hachikō gate, Shibuya Stream, 109 and SHIBUYA SKY — and visits the two sets where the empty and overgrown city was built, in Ashikaga and Yokohama. The story never leaves Tokyo; the production did. This route follows the Netflix series, not Haro Aso's manga, and each stop keeps the story place and its stand-in apart.

Squid Game: Seoul and Incheon Outside the Games

Seong Gi-hun is a divorced gambler in Seoul, broke and in debt. A smiling stranger offers him a game of ddakji on a subway platform, and soon he is playing children's games for his life. The arena is fiction: the games were built as sets at the Daejeon Expo Science Park and later dismantled, and the island exteriors come from Seongapdo, a private island that cannot be visited. Everything around the arena is real — the market, the corner shop, the amusement park, the airport — and this route follows those places in story order, from a schoolyard in the first episode to a park where the Salesman starts recruiting again.
