  1. The story begins at the Louvre, and the production filmed inside the museum itself. The camera moves through the Cour Napoléon, the Carrousel du Louvre, the Grande Galerie and the Mona Lisa room, while crews also shot outside on the museum's exteriors and on nearby streets. It is the stage for the first appearance of Assane Diop, the son of a Senegalese immigrant who becomes a modern-day gentleman thief.

  2. Before his death, Babakar gave his son Assane a copy of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar. In the closing scene of the first episode, Assane passes that same book to his own son Raoul on the Pont des Arts, linking three generations through one novel. The bridge was inaugurated in 1812 and faces the Institut de France. The love locks that once covered it were removed to preserve the bridge, and its railings still give sweeping views over the Seine.

  3. In the series, the home of the wealthy Pellegrini family, Assane's sworn enemies, is the Musée Nissim de Camondo beside Parc Monceau. Crews used the grounds, the interior and even the roof, and the courtyard and garden appear in many flashbacks. The neo-classical house was built between 1911 and 1914 by architect René Sergent. The museum is closed for renovation and expected to reopen in early 2029, but its façade can still be admired from Rue de Monceau.

  4. In one of the series' most memorable scenes, Assane lures Juliette Pellegrini to the octagonal pond in the Luxembourg Gardens, disguised as a bike courier. The police are already there, blending into the crowd. Assane escapes by disappearing into a sudden swarm of bike couriers. The garden was created in 1612 for Marie de' Medici and covers 23 hectares of tree-lined paths.

  5. Much of the fifth episode was filmed in and near Étretat, on the Normandy coast. The town is tied to the character: Maurice Leblanc lived here, and his home is now the Clos Lupin Museum. The chalk cliffs feature in his 1909 novel The Hollow Needle, and the Needle rises 70 metres above the sea. The series boosted tourism in the town.

Precisión del lugar: The pin marks the town of Étretat; the sources do not name the exact filming spots.

Para el visitante: The town and its cliffs are open to visitors; the Clos Lupin Museum is Leblanc's former home.

  6. The third part of the series revolves around the theft of the priceless Black Pearl, and that theft in its first episode is set on Place Vendôme. Many of the exteriors for that part were filmed on the square itself. Part 3 also follows Assane as he tries to mend his relationships with his wife and son. The square is in central Paris.

Life Is Beautiful: From Arezzo to the Camp

Life Is Beautiful (La vita è bella), Benigni's film, is set in Arezzo and shot in Arezzo, Cortona, Montevarchi and Papigno. Guido's romance with Dora plays out around Piazza Grande, the abbey of Saints Flora and Lucilla and a villa in Montevarchi. The route follows the story from Guido's arrival in 1939 to the camp of 1944. Several stops are stand-ins: the opera house is in Cortona and the camp was built near Papigno, not set in a real camp.

Cinema Paradiso: Giancaldo's Sicily

The village of Giancaldo in Cinema Paradiso was filmed mostly in Palazzo Adriano, Sicily: the square, the church that became the cinema and the houses of Totò and Alfredo are all real. The farewell scene was shot at Lascari-Gratteri station. The route follows Salvatore from his boyhood home to the piazza, the church-cinema and the station where he leaves, then back to Alfredo's house thirty years later. The cinema facade was temporary, and the church interior stands in for the cinema.

La Dolce Vita: Fellini's Rome

Fellini's film La Dolce Vita follows the journalist Marcello from Saint Peter's Square to the Baths of Caracalla, the Trevi Fountain and the Via Veneto, ending on a beach at Passo Oscuro. The route follows Marcello's episodes in film order, from the helicopter prologue to the dawn on the beach. Much of the film was shot in studio sets, so the route notes where a real place stood in for a set, or the reverse.
