Quantum of Solace: From Lake Garda to the Atacama

Quantum of Solace films its revenge chase in real places: the lakeside road at Malcesine, the rooftops and Palio crowd of Siena, the floating opera stage at Bregenz, the docks of Colón, a tower at Talamone and the Atacama Desert. Bond follows Mr White from Lake Garda to Siena, then Greene through Haiti, Austria and Bolivia, with Panama standing in for both Haiti and Bolivia and Chile for the Bolivian desert.

Cronología y lugares

¿Qué significan las etiquetas de los lugares?
Exacto
  1. Quantum of Solace opens at full speed: Bond drives Mr White away from Lake Garda towards Siena, with pursuers on his tail. The chase was filmed on the lake's eastern shore, starting at Malcesine and following the SS249 north along the water. It is a road, not a square, so the pin marks the village where the sequence begins. Above the road stands the Castello Scaligero, Malcesine's landmark, with 13th-century fortifications and a small museum on the natural history of Lake Garda.

Precisión del lugar: The chase runs along the SS249 through Malcesine; the pin marks the village where it starts.

  2. Bond delivers Mr White to M in Siena, but the interrogation goes wrong: Mitchell, M's bodyguard, shoots a guard and attacks her, and Bond chases him over the rooftops. Those roofs are real — the chase was not faked in a studio, but filmed above Siena. In the square below, the Palio was recreated with 1,000 extras and Bond emerging from the Fonte Gaia; the race footage itself was shot at the real Palio on 16 August 2007. The bareback race still circles Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August.

Para el visitante: The Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August; the square is open to walk the rest of the year.

  3. Mitchell's flat in London is where Bond and M discover that the dead bodyguard had a contact named Edmund Slate in Haiti. The building is real: the flat is in the northernmost of the Water Gardens, three Sixties tower blocks at the junction of Edgware Road and Sussex Gardens, and Bond is driven in through an entrance on Burwood Place. It is a private, gated estate, so this is a look-from-outside stop rather than a visit.

  4. Haiti is played by Panama. The Haitian waterfront where Bond meets Camille was shot in Colón, the seaport at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal; a sequence there used several hundred extras. In the story this is Port-au-Prince, where Slate, a hitman sent by Greene to kill Camille, is traced. The docks are a working waterfront in a deprived city, and location guides warn about crime, so treat this as a map stop rather than a walk.

Precisión del lugar: The Haitian scenes were shot on Colón's waterfront; the pin marks the city centre.

  5. Bond follows Greene to Bregenz, where Quantum's members meet during a performance of Tosca on the Seebühne, the floating stage on Lake Constance. The stage is the largest of its kind in the world, with a 7,000-seat amphitheatre, and the production used a giant eye as its set. Bond infiltrates the meeting and a gunfight follows; the sequence required 1,500 extras. Filming ran from 28 April to 9 May 2008, on the same stage that hosts the Bregenz Festival each July and August. Guided tours run from May to August.

  6. After Bregenz, Bond goes to Talamone and talks René Mathis into coming to Bolivia. Mathis's home is the Torre di Talamonaccio, a restored medieval tower on the promontory south of the Gulf of Talamone, east of the village. In the film it is a quiet stop before Bolivia; in life the tower has been a private home and can now be rented as holiday accommodation. Talamone itself was one of the film's 2008 settings.

Para el visitante: The tower is a private holiday let, not a museum; it can be rented.

  7. Bolivia is also Panama. Bond flies in after Talamone with René Mathis, and Strawberry Fields meets him in La Paz; the grand hotel where he stays is really the Instituto Nacional de Cultura on Plaza de Francia, in Panama City's Casco Antiguo. The building was conceived as a Legislative and Justice Palace, and its construction was reorganised in 1931. Bond and Fields go from there to Greene's fundraising party. The hotel exists only on screen; the real building is a government culture ministry, not a place to book.

Precisión del lugar: The 'Andean Grand Hotel' exists only in the story; the pin marks the Instituto Nacional de Cultura, which stood in for it.

  8. Greene's hideout is the Perla de las Dunas, a hotel in the Bolivian desert that exists only in the film. In reality the stand-in is the Residencia at the Paranal Observatory, the ESO Hotel in the Atacama Desert, built into the mountain and fitted with a pool; director Forster chose the desert and the hotel for the climax. Bond and Camille infiltrate the hotel and the building burns; Bond leaves Greene in the desert with a can of engine oil. Chile filming began at Antofagasta on 24 March 2008.

  9. The last scene moves to Kazan, Russia, where Bond finds Yusef Kabira, the man who seduced Vesper. The snowy street was not shot in Russia: it was filmed at Bruneval Barracks in Aldershot, inside Aldershot Garrison. After the confrontation Bond drops Vesper's necklace in the snow and walks away. The barracks are military land, so there is nothing to visit; the pin marks the garrison that supplied the winter backdrop.

Magnificent Century: Süleyman's Istanbul

Magnificent Century was filmed at Hadımköy's TEM studios, with a replica of Topkapı Palace; its story runs from Topkapı and the Old Palace to Süleymaniye, Hürrem's bathhouse and tomb. Hürrem rises from harem slave to Suleiman's legal wife, a jump the series turns into a court war. The route follows her from Topkapı and the Old Palace, where the harem lived until 1541, past the mosque Suleiman built for his son, Sinan's Süleymaniye, the bathhouse she endowed near Hagia Sophia, and the tiled tomb where she lies. The palace on screen was a set; the real buildings are still in the city.

Bandit Petersburg: The Series' St Petersburg

Bandit Petersburg (Бандитский Петербург), the 2000–07 crime saga, is set and filmed in St Petersburg: the courtyard at Bolshaya Monetnaya 11, the Benois House on Kamennoostrovsky Prospect and the Kresty prison are among its most recognisable addresses. This route follows the city of Film 2, The Lawyer (2000), from Chelishev's old courtyard and the police headquarters on the Petrograd side to Antibiotic's Fontanka restaurant, Zvantsev's flat in the Benois House, the gates of Kresty and the Angleterre restaurant where the film ends. All seven stops are real places; one is an active police building and one a working hotel.
