Romulus and Remus: The Founding of Rome

The legend of Romulus and Remus begins at Alba Longa in the Alban Hills and ends on Rome's Palatine and Aventine hills, with a she-wolf's cave and a fig tree along the Tiber in between. The bronze Capitoline Wolf still carries the story to visitors on the Capitoline Hill. The route follows the myth from the twins' birth to the quarrel that leaves Romulus as founder. Most sites are traditional rather than proven, and the stops say so.

トロイアは陥落した。トロイアの王子アエネアスは、年老いた父を背負って燃える都から逃れ、神々が約束した新たな故郷を探して、生き残った者たちと船出する。紀元前20年代にアウグストゥスのために書かれたウェルギリウスの「アエネーイス」は、数年にわたる道の誤り、嵐、予言を経て、一行がイタリアに上陸するまでを追う。その子孫は、いつかローマを建てることになる。このルートは航海を起きた順にたどるが、それはウェルギリウスの語る順ではない。詩はカルタゴで幕を開け、アエネアスが女王ディドに、それ以前の放浪を語って聞かせる形をとっている。どの立ち寄り先も実在の古代遺跡で、その大半は今は考古学公園として公開されている。アエネアス自身は伝説の人物である。引用はジョン・ドライデンによる1697年の英訳に基づく。
