Cinema Paradiso: Giancaldo's Sicily

The village of Giancaldo in Cinema Paradiso was filmed mostly in Palazzo Adriano, Sicily: the square, the church that became the cinema and the houses of Totò and Alfredo are all real. The farewell scene was shot at Lascari-Gratteri station.

Contains major story spoilers.

  1. A few years after the war, eight-year-old Salvatore, called Totò, is the mischievous, intelligent son of a war widow. His home in the film is the house at Via Molinello 110 in Palazzo Adriano. From here he slips away whenever he can to the Cinema Paradiso on the main square. The house is a private home, so look from the street only.

  2. This is the town square of the film. Young Totò spends every free moment at the Cinema Paradiso, and the production built the cinema's facade on Piazza Umberto I in Palazzo Adriano, overlooking an octagonal Baroque fountain dating from 1608. Filming here lasted three months and drew in part of the local population as extras. The facade was taken down when shooting ended, but the square remains, and the former town hall on it now houses a museum devoted to the film.

訪問のヒント: The piazza is public; the film museum is in the former town hall on the square.

  3. The Cinema Paradiso you see from inside is a church. For the interior shots, the production chose the Church of Maria Santissima del Carmelo, also in Palazzo Adriano. In those scenes Alfredo teaches Totò to run the projector, and later a reel of nitrate film explodes in Alfredo's face, leaving him permanently blind. The church has a single nave and a portal framed by Corinthian columns.

場所の精度: The pin marks Via XX Settembre, the street of the church; the exact building could not be pinned from the sources.

  4. The farewell scene was shot at a real railway station. Lascari-Gratteri stands in for the station of the imaginary village of Giancaldo, where Salvatore says goodbye to his friend Alfredo and to his family before boarding the train. Alfredo has told him to leave and live "never looking back and never returning, even to visit". Salvatore does not go back to Giancaldo, Sicily, for thirty years.

  5. Back for Alfredo's funeral, Salvatore meets the old man's widow, who tells him Alfredo followed his successes with pride. She gives him two things Alfredo left for him: an unlabelled film reel and the old stool he once stood on to operate the projector. In the film her home stands under the arch of Via Chiara. Back in Rome, Salvatore finds the reel holds every kiss the priest had ordered cut, spliced together into one.

La Dolce Vita: Fellini's Rome

Fellini's film La Dolce Vita follows the journalist Marcello from Saint Peter's Square to the Baths of Caracalla, the Trevi Fountain and the Via Veneto, ending on a beach at Passo Oscuro. The route follows Marcello's episodes in film order, from the helicopter prologue to the dawn on the beach. Much of the film was shot in studio sets, so the route notes where a real place stood in for a set, or the reverse.

Inspector Montalbano: Vigàta in Ragusa

Inspector Montalbano is set in the fictional town of Vigàta, based on Camilleri's native Porto Empedocle, but the series is largely filmed in the province of Ragusa: Scicli's town hall, the beach at Punta Secca, the ruined Fornace Penna and Ragusa Ibla. This route follows six filming locations, from Montalbano's offices and home to Donnafugata Castle and the Guerrieri Viaduct in Modica. Camilleri set his books in a fictionalised province of Agrigento, so these are screen stand-ins, not the novels' own places.

Normal People: Sligo, Dublin, Trieste

Sally Rooney's Normal People is set in County Sligo and at Trinity College Dublin, but the television series was shot in a school in Clonsilla, the pubs of Tubbercurry, Trinity itself, a villa in Lazio and a frozen coast at Luleå. The route follows Marianne and Connell from their last school days to university and abroad. Several stops are stand-ins for places the story names, and each says so.
