  1. Muir left Indianapolis by rail, then crossed the Ohio at Louisville on 2 September 1867 and steered through the big city by compass. Days later he reached the great Mammoth Cave and was surprised to find it so natural: only a narrow trail down a glen led to its door. Today the cave belongs to Mammoth Cave National Park, which protects the longest known cave system in the world.

場所の精度: The pin marks Mammoth Cave National Park; Muir only says he reached the cave by a trail down a glen.

訪問のヒント: Mammoth Cave National Park is open to visitors; check the park's own pages for tours.

  2. Heading south through Kentucky, Muir began the ascent of the Cumberland Mountains, "the first real mountains" his feet had ever touched. The ascent zigzagged up a slope covered like a tunnel by overarching oaks. The range is part of the Appalachian Mountains.

場所の精度: Muir's route crossed the range in Tennessee; the pin marks the Cumberland Mountains in general, not his exact path.

  3. Waiting in Savannah for money from home, Muir slept in Bonaventure graveyard, reached by a smooth white shell road a few miles from town. He found it so lovely that he did not wonder a man should dwell among the tombs. He spent six days and nights there, sleeping upon graves. Bonaventure Cemetery can still be visited.

訪問のヒント: Bonaventure Cemetery is a public cemetery; visit by day and keep to the paths.

  4. On 23 October 1867 Muir reached the sea; at Cedar Keys he stood at last before the Gulf of Mexico, stretching away unbounded except by the sky. Then he fell ill, probably with malaria, and was nursed in the Hodgson family's house, to whose care he said he doubtless owed his life. The Cedar Keys are a cluster of islands near the mainland, and the town of Cedar Key lies among them.

場所の精度: Muir does not give a street address; the pin marks the town of Cedar Key, not the Hodgson house or mill.

  5. The walk ended at the Gulf, but Muir's real destination came later. After reaching San Francisco about 1 April 1868 and staying only one day, he set off for Yosemite Valley, passing the mammoth trees of Mariposa. Yosemite Valley is a glacial valley in Yosemite National Park, in California's western Sierra Nevada.

場所の精度: Yosemite Valley is a whole valley; the pin marks it generally.

訪問のヒント: Yosemite Valley is the park's main visitor area; check current park conditions before you go.

Heyerdahl's Ra II: Safi to Barbados

In 1970 Thor Heyerdahl sailed the papyrus boat Ra II from Safi in Morocco to Barbados, with reed from Lake Tana, builders from Lake Titicaca and a finish in Barbados. Today the boat sits in the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo. The route follows the boat from its materials and builders to the departure, the landfall and the museum. Most stops are approximate: sources name the lakes, the port and the island, not exact docks.

Mutiny on the Bounty: Tahiti to Pitcairn

The 1789 mutiny on HMS Bounty began about 30 nautical miles south of Tofua, after five months at Point Venus in Tahiti, and ended on Pitcairn Island, where the ship was burned. Bligh's launch took in Restoration Island and Kupang on Timor. The route follows both halves of the story: Captain Bligh's 41-day open-boat voyage to Timor, and Christian's search for a hiding place. Most stops are remote; the caveat is that the mutiny spot at sea can only be marked by the nearest island.

Franklin's Lost Expedition: Orkney to the Wrecks

Sir John Franklin's 1845 search for the Northwest Passage began at Stromness in Orkney, passed Disko Bay in Greenland and Beechey Island, and ended off King William Island, where HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were trapped in ice in 1846. No one from the expedition came home. The route follows the ships from Orkney to the Victory Point note, the last message the crew left, then to the two wrecks found in 2014 and 2016. Most Arctic stops are remote or protected, so treat them as map stories rather than places to visit.
