Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. The zombie apocalypse opens with chaos on a downtown street, while Columbus, a former college student with a unique set of zombie survival rules, explains how he stays alive. Those street scenes were staged on Edgewood Avenue NE at Park Place NE in downtown Atlanta. The film travels from Texas to Los Angeles, but it was made almost entirely in Georgia, and this is where the journey starts on screen.

Location precision: The pin marks Hurt Park on Edgewood Avenue; the scenes were staged at the Edgewood and Park Place corner nearby.

  2. Columbus and Tallahassee raid a deserted grocery store and meet two sisters, Wichita and Little Rock, who trick them and steal their weapons and truck. The store was a vacant building just west of Powder Springs, about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. Powder Springs is one of the Georgia towns that stood in for the American road trip.

Location precision: The pin marks Brownsville Road near Powder Springs, where the vacant building stood, not the building itself.

  3. In a flashback, Wichita and Little Rock are seen working an engagement ring scam at the Gas'n'Gulp filling station. The set was a real service station, the Pure Service at 249 East Ponce de Leon Avenue at North Candler Street in Decatur, one of the Georgia towns where filming took place in March 2009.

  4. Columbus and Tallahassee find themselves trudging on foot through a town square. Tallahassee takes out his frustrations on a van parked on Jefferson Street. The scene was shot in Court Square in Newnan, southwest of Atlanta, one of the Georgia towns used for the film's American heartland.

Location precision: The pin marks Court Square in Newnan; the exact camera spot on the square is not given in the source.

  5. When the group reaches Hollywood, Tallahassee directs them to Bill Murray's house. In front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard, they grab a map to the homes of the stars. Principal photography began in February 2009 in Hollywood, California, a California stop in a film made almost entirely in Georgia.

Visitor guidance: The theatre stands on Hollywood Boulevard in the middle of Hollywood.

  6. Bill Murray is found uninfected and disguised as a zombie in his Beverly Hills mansion, and the group plays a prank on him that ends with Columbus accidentally killing him. The grand mansion is not really in Beverly Hills: it stands on West Paces Ferry Road in the Argonne Forest suburb of northern Atlanta.

Location precision: The house is a private home, so the pin marks West Paces Ferry Road in northern Atlanta, not the building.

  7. The sisters head for Pacific Playland, an amusement park in Los Angeles said to be free of zombies. In the finale they are trapped on a drop tower ride until Tallahassee and Columbus arrive. The park scenes were mostly shot at Wild Adventures Water and Theme Park in Valdosta, Georgia, in February 2009. The film's Blast Off drop tower is a real ride called the Firecracker, and you can ride it.

Location precision: Pacific Playland exists only in the story; the pin marks Wild Adventures in Valdosta, Georgia, where it was filmed.

Visitor guidance: Wild Adventures is a working theme park at 3766 Old Clyattville Road, Valdosta; check opening days before you go.
