Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Filming Locations
Where was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets filmed? Hogwarts is Alnwick Castle, Lacock Abbey, Gloucester and Durham cathedrals and Oxford's Bodleian Library, while King's Cross plays Platform 9¾.
The route follows the 2002 film from the blocked barrier to the hunt for the heir of Slytherin, six real places across England. Most scenes were built at Leavesden Studios, so some pins mark where a location was used, not one exact scene.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
In the film, Harry is blocked from entering Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at King's Cross: Dobby has closed the barrier. Harry and Ron fly Mr Weasley's car, built from a 1962 Ford Anglia, to Hogwarts instead. King's Cross was the filming location for the platform, though neighbouring St Pancras station was used for the exterior shots.

Harry and Ron's flying car reaches Hogwarts and crashes into the Whomping Willow. Alnwick Castle in Northumberland was a stand-in for both the exterior and the interior of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, and it appears in Chamber of Secrets (2002).
Visitor guidance: The castle is open to the public throughout the summer.

Some interior sequences of Chamber of Secrets were filmed at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, including the cloister walk where Harry comes out of Professor Lockhart's room after serving detention and hears the basilisk, a giant serpent that kills people who make direct eye contact. The abbey is a Grade I listed building owned by the National Trust.

In the story, the caretaker's cat Mrs Norris is found petrified with a message written in blood. Gloucester Cathedral was used as a setting for Hogwarts School in the film, and it appears in the first, second and sixth Harry Potter films. Its cloisters, rebuilt in the 14th century, display the earliest surviving example of structural fan vaulting.

In the story, Harry's arm is broken by a rogue Bludger in a Quidditch match, and while he recovers Dobby visits him. In the first two films the Divinity School of Oxford's Bodleian Library doubles as the Hogwarts hospital wing, and Duke Humfrey's Library stands in for the Hogwarts library.

As more students are petrified, Harry is suspected of being the heir of Slytherin after communicating with a snake. Durham Cathedral is another real building used for Hogwarts, alongside Gloucester Cathedral, and it appears in the first two Harry Potter films. It has doubled as a number of fantasy locations in larger-budget productions.
