What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The Order of the Phoenix, a secret organisation founded by Albus Dumbledore, escorts Harry through the night sky to its headquarters at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. The filmmakers used the River Thames for the flight, and the sequence passes landmarks including the London Eye, Canary Wharf, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and HMS Belfast. Grimmauld Place itself was a set at Leavesden Studios, so the river is the real location to see.

Location precision: The flight follows the river through central London; the pin marks the Thames near the Embankment, not a single spot.

Visitor guidance: Walk the riverside or cross a central London bridge for views of Big Ben and the London Eye.

  2. Harry has been expelled from Hogwarts for using magic and must defend himself at the Ministry of Magic. Arthur Weasley accompanies him to the trial, and the walk was filmed at Westminster tube station, which the crew closed on 22 October 2006 to shoot it. Harry is later exonerated. The station stands at the corner of Bridge Street and Victoria Embankment.

Visitor guidance: A working Underground station on the Circle, District and Jubilee lines, close to Big Ben.

  3. In Glenfinnan, the Hogwarts Express crosses a viaduct, as it has in the earlier films. The railway viaduct on the West Highland Line was built from 1897 to 1901 and appears in four of the Harry Potter films, so it is sometimes called the Harry Potter Bridge. Fan crowds have grown so large that British Transport Police warned people not to walk on the viaduct.

Visitor guidance: View it from beside the line; never walk on the viaduct itself.

  4. Aerial scenes were shot in Glen Coe, Clachaig Gully and Glen Etive. At the time of filming Glen Etive was one of the few places in Scotland without snow, which made it an ideal backdrop. It is a glen in the Scottish Highlands that has also served as a film location for Braveheart and Skyfall. A narrow road runs down the glen from the Kings House Hotel, and the area is home to a herd of Scottish red deer.

Location precision: The film does not name the exact aerial shots; the pin marks Glen Etive, one of three glens used.

Visitor guidance: A narrow road runs down the glen from the Kings House Hotel.

  5. Harry and his friends ride Thestrals to the Ministry of Magic to save Sirius. The flight of Dumbledore's Army over the Thames reuses the filming of the river, and its landmarks include the London Eye, Canary Wharf, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and HMS Belfast. The London Eye is a cantilevered observation wheel on the South Bank, so the wheel is the easiest part of the skyline to find on the ground.

Location precision: The flight crosses the whole river; the pin marks the London Eye as the most recognisable landmark in it.

Visitor guidance: The London Eye stands on the South Bank of the Thames, visible from the river's banks and bridges.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Filming Locations

Where was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets filmed? Hogwarts is Alnwick Castle, Lacock Abbey, Gloucester and Durham cathedrals and Oxford's Bodleian Library, while King's Cross plays Platform 9¾. The route follows the 2002 film from the blocked barrier to the hunt for the heir of Slytherin, six real places across England. Most scenes were built at Leavesden Studios, so some pins mark where a location was used, not one exact scene.
