Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Sicily, Glasgow, Fez
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) was filmed at a Scottish railway viaduct, Glasgow's streets dressed as 1969 New York, the streets of Fez playing Tangier, and Sicily around Syracuse, including the Ear of Dionysius and Castello Maniace.
Six stops follow the story from a 1944 train to the Siege of Syracuse in 214 BC. Filming ran from June 2021, and Archimedes' tomb was filmed at Pinewood rather than on location.

Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The film opens in 1944. Jones escapes onto a Berlin-bound train filled with looted antiquities, frees Basil and takes a piece of the Dial before Allied warplanes derail it. The scene is said to be in Switzerland, but the bridge shots were filmed in mid-June 2021 at Leaderfoot Viaduct near Melrose, in the Scottish Borders. The viaduct opened on 16 November 1863, stands 126 feet above the valley floor and was renovated between 1992 and 1995.
Visitor guidance: The viaduct is near Melrose in the Scottish Borders and can be seen from the valley.

In 1969 Jones is framed for two murders and has to slip through the Apollo 11 moon landing parade, then an anti-war protest. Glasgow's city centre was dressed as New York City in 1969 for two weeks in July 2021. A chase along St. Vincent Street and other streets re-creates the ticker tape parade for the returning astronauts, with 1,000 background actors as parade-goers and Vietnam War protestors.
Location precision: The film used St. Vincent Street and other Glasgow streets; the pin marks St Vincent Street only.
Visitor guidance: St Vincent Street is a public street in Glasgow city centre.

In Tangier, Jones breaks up Helena's illegal private auction. Voller steals the Dial and a chase follows through the streets, with Jones, Helena and Teddy Kumar in a tuk-tuk. It was shot in Fez, not Tangier: filming in Morocco began on 17 October 2021, and the chase needed a dozen tuk-tuks, run mainly by a second unit crew. The Medina of Fez is a World Heritage Site.

Chasing Voller to Greece, Jones, Helena and Teddy meet Renaldo, Jones' old friend and a professional diver. Guided by Basil's research notes, they dive to the Antikythera wreck for a tablet with directions to the Dial's other half. The Greek scenes were filmed in Sicily, which stood in for itself and Greece, and Castellammare del Golfo was the harbor where Renaldo meets Jones. The town has a marina called Cala Marina with many restaurants and bars.
Location precision: The sources name the town as the harbor but not the exact quay; the pin marks the town centre.
Visitor guidance: The town's harbour is lined with restaurants and bars.

Inside the Ear of Dionysius, Jones and Helena find Archimedes' tomb, the second half of the Dial, and a 20th-century wristwatch on the skeleton's arm. The cave is a limestone cavern carved out of the Temenites hill in Syracuse, 23 metres high and 65 metres deep; Caravaggio named it in 1608. The scenes leading up to the tomb were shot at the cave, in the Neapolis archaeological park, but the tomb itself was filmed at Pinewood.
Visitor guidance: The cave is in the Neapolis archaeological park in Syracuse.

Voller's time jump goes wrong: instead of 1939, the group arrives at the Siege of Syracuse in 214 BC. The warring armies shoot down his plane, believing it is a dragon, and Archimedes gives Jones the Dial. Scenes of the Roman siege were shot at Castello Maniace in Syracuse, a castle built on the tip of Ortygia between 1232 and 1240 by Emperor Frederick II. It is open to the public today.
Visitor guidance: The castle is open to the public at the tip of Ortygia.
