What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The film opens with Max captured by Immortan Joe's War Boys and taken to the Citadel, Joe's fortress. The Citadel was not found in the desert. Its termite-mound-style towers were a mix of sets at film studios in South Africa and Sydney, and some scenes were shot at Cape Town Film Studios, a 200-hectare lot about 30 kilometres from the centre of Cape Town. The desert chase that follows was shot in Namibia.

Location precision: Sources say some scenes were shot at this studio and that the Citadel sets were split between South Africa and Sydney; the pin marks the studio only.

  2. Max comes across the broken-down Rig, and a full-blown fight breaks out between him and Furiosa on the desolate Blanky Flats, north of Henties Bay on the C34 Skeleton Coast Road. The same area was used for the armada of customised war vehicles speeding through the desert in clouds of dust. Henties Bay is a holiday settlement 72 kilometres north of Swakopmund.

Location precision: The guide names the Blanky Flats north of Henties Bay, not an exact spot; the pin marks the town.

  3. Joe leads his entire army in pursuit of the Rig, and more of the chase was filmed among the dunes around the old Strathmore Mine, inland from Cape Cross. Cape Cross is home to one of the largest colonies of Cape fur seals in the world. It is also where Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão arrived in January 1486, the first European to visit the area.

Location precision: The mine is described only as inland from Cape Cross; the pin marks the seal reserve.

  4. Furiosa drives through a canyon controlled by a biker gang, having arranged to trade petrol for safe passage. The rocky canyon the 18-wheeler war-rig has to pass is part of the Swakop River Valley. The Swakop is a long river that crosses the Namib desert and reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Swakopmund.

Location precision: The guide names the river valley, not a specific canyon; the pin marks the river near its mouth.

  5. At night, Furiosa and Max drive through a swamp and get stuck in the mud. On screen it is swamp; on location the mud is the salt pans at Paaltjies, on a spit of land at Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay Salt produces about 1 million tons of salt a year by solar evaporation of sea water, and the town's lagoon is home to huge flocks of flamingos.

Location precision: The guide names the Paaltjies salt pans without an exact spot; the pin marks the centre of Walvis Bay.

  6. Max and Furiosa meet the Vuvalini in the arid dunes between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, and learn that the Green Place is the uninhabitable swamp they crossed the night before with only seven Vuvalini left. Swakopmund, Namibia's second city, lies at the mouth of the Swakop River. Quad biking, camel rides and desert day trips are offered in the sand dunes near Langstrand.

Location precision: The guide gives only the stretch between the two towns; the pin marks Swakopmund.

The Piano: Karekare Beach to Nelson

The Piano (1993) was filmed in New Zealand, with its famous beach scene shot at Karekare Beach west of Auckland, plus farms at Matakana and Awakino and underwater scenes in the Bay of Islands. Jane Campion's film follows Ada, a woman who does not speak, from a beach where her piano is left behind to a new life in Nelson. The route follows the story through five places, each marked as a film location or story setting. Nelson, the film's ending, is a story setting, not a filming site.

Home and Away: Summer Bay Filming Locations

Home and Away is set in the fictional town of Summer Bay, but its beach scenes are filmed at Palm Beach and Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches, with the Summer Bay House at Kenthurst. The route follows the Australian soap from its 1988 start to location shoots in the Flinders Ranges and at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Summer Bay itself is not on any map; the pins mark where the cameras stood.

Amores perros: Mexico City Crossroads

Amores perros (2000) is set in Mexico City, and its famous car crash was filmed at Juan Escutia and Atlixco in Colonia Condesa. Other scenes tie to Tetepilco, the Panteón Alemán area, Paseo de la Reforma and the Taxqueña bus terminal. This route follows Octavio's story and the crash that links three lives, from his family home to the dogfights, El Chivo's hit, the collision and a bus station where nobody arrives. The house and dogfight stops are private homes, so their pins mark only the area.
