What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The game begins on the North African front. Lieutenant Mike Powell and a squad of Rangers fight into German-occupied Arzew, a port about 40 km from Oran, and an ambush kills everyone but Powell. He rescues the S.A.S. agent Major Jack Grillo, destroys fighters and Stuka dive bombers on an airfield, then fights his way to a coastal lighthouse to signal the Allied fleet to begin Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa.

Location precision: The mission names Arzew but not a specific street, bunker or lighthouse; the pin marks the port town.

  2. Powell and Grillo are sent to German-occupied Norway to infiltrate Trondheim, where a U-boat is being fitted with a prototype Naxos radar detector. Grillo is killed opening the gate, so Powell goes in alone, disguised as a German officer. In the lab he destroys the Naxos prototype. Trondheim really was occupied from 9 April 1940 until 8 May 1945.

Location precision: The game does not tie its base to a real site in Trondheim; the pin marks the city.

  3. The famous landing level. Powell, with the 2nd Ranger Battalion under Capt. Ramsay, is sent to Charlie sector of Omaha Beach. The Rangers storm the bunkers despite heavy casualties and secure the beach. Omaha was one of five Allied landing sectors of Operation Overlord, divided into ten sectors that begin with Charlie.

Location precision: Omaha Beach runs for miles and Charlie sector is its western end; the pin marks the beach, not the game's exact landing spot.

Visitor guidance: Omaha Beach is a stretch of the Normandy coast in France.

  4. Beyond the beaches, Powell helps US airborne troops clear a path for forces advancing from Omaha towards Carentan. Along the way he calls air support on several Flak 88 cannons and destroys a battery of Nebelwerfers. In real history the town fell to the 101st Airborne, and its capture gave the Allies a continuous front joining Omaha to Utah Beach.

Location precision: The game sets this level in the countryside on the way to Carentan, not at a named spot; the pin marks the town.

    Sources

  5. Powell hijacks a King Tiger tank and uses it to secure a vital bridge at the city of Brest. He first navigates sniper-infested ruins to meet the American tank crew, then fights through the countryside. Brest really was almost totally destroyed in the Battle for Brest in 1944, with only a tiny number of buildings left standing.

Location precision: The game does not name the bridge; the pin marks the city of Brest.

Need for Speed: The Run — San Francisco to New York

Need for Speed: The Run races across the United States, from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco through Death Valley, Las Vegas, Denver and Chicago to Times Square in New York. The racing game is an illegal street race from San Francisco to New York City with the Mob and the police in pursuit. Wikipedia records two plots: the Black Box version, starring street racer Jack Rourke, and a Firebrand version, starring a former pro racer called Matt. Most scenes here come from the Firebrand version; each stop says which. The roads are real, but scenes are not tied to exact spots, so most pins mark the city or region. Spoiler notice: the last stop reveals the ending.
