What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Hauke Jacobs, a former Hamburg police officer, settles on the Baltic coast in the fictional village of Schwanitz to work as a vet. There is no such village: the production films the made-up place on the Priwall and in Travemünde, and the story itself is set in that area. The Priwall is a peninsula about three kilometres long at the mouth of the Trave.

Location precision: Schwanitz does not exist; the pin marks the Priwall peninsula, where the series films its setting.

Visitor guidance: The Priwall peninsula is part of Lübeck-Travemünde on the Trave mouth.

  2. Jacobs buys an old, habitable ship that becomes his home, and fans nicknamed it the Princess of Schwanitz. In reality the boat is called Seeadler, and during filming it lies in the harbour of Orth, on the south-west coast of Fehmarn. The harbour is where the series shoots its harbour scenes. Orth is tiny, with about 60 permanent residents.

Visitor guidance: Orth harbour on Fehmarn is a public harbour settlement; the boat is moored here only during filming.

  3. When the village vet dies, Jacobs takes over his practice and keeps the assistant Jule Christiansen. In reality the practice scenes were shot in Neuengamme, one of the four districts of Hamburg's Vierlande. The building on the main street once belonged to a real vet, who rented it to the film crew.

Location precision: The sources give only the street, Hauptstraße in Neuengamme, so the route shows no pin.

  4. Viewers often see officers driving a patrol car along the island's country roads, with a silo and a church in the background. The church is St. Johannis in Petersdorf, on Fehmarn. It is a Gothic building from the middle of the 13th century.

Visitor guidance: St. Johannis is the village church of Petersdorf, inland on Fehmarn.

  5. The guesthouse called Pension Ahab in the series is a real hotel on the Elbstraße in Geesthacht, with a dining room, guest rooms and a hall in 1960s style. Geesthacht is the other town that appears in the list of filming places, next to Fehmarn, the Priwall and the Vierlande. A barn at Gut Hasenthal in Geesthacht was also used for part 11 of the series.

Visitor guidance: The Hotel zur Post stands on Elbstraße in Geesthacht.

Australia (2008): Kimberley to Bowen

Baz Luhrmann's Australia is set in 1939-1942 on the fictional Faraway Downs and in wartime Darwin, but it was filmed around Carlton Hill Station and Kununurra in the Kimberley, in Bowen, Queensland, and at Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin. This route follows the cattle drive from the Kimberley homestead to Darwin and the 1942 bombing, with the real places that stood in for each scene. Several settings were doubles: Darwin's Government House is Sydney's Strickland House, and Bowen plays 1940s Darwin.

Mad Max: Fury Road Filming Locations in Namibia

Mad Max: Fury Road was filmed mostly in Namibia, around Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Cape Cross and Walvis Bay, with the Citadel built as sets in Cape Town and Sydney. The production first planned to shoot at Broken Hill in Australia, but heavy rain had turned the desert green, so the wasteland moved to the Namib. This route follows the film's chase from the Citadel through the Skeleton Coast dunes, the Swakop River canyon and the Walvis Bay salt pans to the Green Place. The pins are approximate: the sources name areas, not exact spots.

The Piano: Karekare Beach to Nelson

The Piano (1993) was filmed in New Zealand, with its famous beach scene shot at Karekare Beach west of Auckland, plus farms at Matakana and Awakino and underwater scenes in the Bay of Islands. Jane Campion's film follows Ada, a woman who does not speak, from a beach where her piano is left behind to a new life in Nelson. The route follows the story through five places, each marked as a film location or story setting. Nelson, the film's ending, is a story setting, not a filming site.
