What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Grímsvötn is an Escort map that arrived on 6 October 2026 with Season 5, set deep in the fire and ice of an Icelandic volcanic fissure. It was once an Overwatch Watchpoint, later controlled by Helix, and was built to make sure prisoners never got out; it has housed some of the world's most dangerous criminals. The facility is fiction, but its name belongs to a real active volcano in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland.

Location precision: The prison is invented; the pin marks the real Grímsvötn volcano that gives it its name.

  2. Esperança is a Push map set in a Portuguese city, made for the launch of Overwatch 2 in October 2022. Its central landmark is a baroque-style tower inspired by Torre dos Clérigos in Porto, and the artists also drew on Lisbon and Braga. The real tower is 75 metres tall and can be seen from various points of the city. The pin marks the tower.

Location precision: Esperança is an invented city; the pin marks Torre dos Clérigos, the real tower that inspired the map's centre.

Visitor guidance: Torre dos Clérigos rises above Porto and can be seen from many points of the city.

  3. Watchpoint: Gibraltar is a payload map set at a decommissioned Overwatch base on the Rock of Gibraltar, at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. In the story Winston stayed at the former Overwatch facility, and in the attackers' spawn he keeps extensive notes on a blackboard. It is one of the original maps from the May 2016 launch. The pin marks the Rock.

Location precision: The base is invented, so the pin marks the Rock of Gibraltar.

  4. King's Row is the upper-class King's Row neighborhood of London, England, an original map from the May 2016 launch. In the story Null Sector took control of it, holding the omnic monk Tekhartha Mondatta, the mayor of London and a hundred other hostages, and Overwatch sent Mercy, Reinhardt and Torbjörn, aided by Tracer on her first mission as a cadet. On the map a statue of Mondatta holding a child's hand stands near the spot where he was killed.

Location precision: King's Row is an invented district; the pin marks central London.

  5. Château Guillard is a Deathmatch map added on 29 August 2017. It stands near Annecy in southeastern France, and for hundreds of years it was the estate of the influential Guillard family. In the story the château has a new owner: the Talon agent Widowmaker, who has returned to her family's ancestral home. The château is invented, so the pin marks Annecy, the town the patch notes name.

Location precision: The château is invented; the patch notes place it near Annecy, so the pin marks the town.

  6. Circuit Royal is an Escort map from the Overwatch 2 beta of April 2022: protect the payload up a gilded promenade, through the marble archways of luxurious Monte Carlo, towards the majestic Hotel Arche. It is the future playground of the mega-rich. The art team leaned heavily into the opulence of Monte Carlo's architecture and the prestigious races the city is known for.

Location precision: The map is an invented, futuristic Monte Carlo; the pin marks Monte Carlo itself.

  7. Malevento is a free-for-all map that arrived on 28 September 2021: a peaceful Italian hilltop town with a cursed past. The artists imagined an idyllic hilltop town in the quiet Italian countryside and looked at medieval towns for inspiration; Tuscan villages like Montepulciano and Pitigliano, known for lush landscapes and maze-like streets, inspired them. The pin marks Pitigliano.

Location precision: Malevento is invented; the team names two Tuscan villages as inspiration, and the pin marks Pitigliano.

Visitor guidance: Pitigliano is a town in the province of Grosseto, about 80 km south-east of the city of Grosseto.

  8. Rialto is an Escort map added in the patch of 3 May 2018. It was home to Talon agent Antonio Bartalotti, whose residence was in Venice, Italy, and the backdrop to the Venice Incident. In the story Blackwatch's strike team entered his manor and, instead of arresting him, Reyes carried out an impromptu assassination that blazed through Rialto.

Location precision: The map is a stylised future Venice; the pin marks the Rialto Bridge as a stand-in.

  9. Colosseo is one of the two Push maps added in the Overwatch 2 beta on 29 April 2022. Teams fight over a robot ally in the streets and piazzas outside the legendary arena, and the art team drew on the Renaissance and on the gladiators of Ancient Rome. The real Colosseum stands in the centre of Rome, just east of the Roman Forum.

Visitor guidance: One of Rome's most popular tourist attractions, just east of the Roman Forum.

  10. Ilios is a Control map from the May 2016 launch, built on the idea of a vacation spot. It sits on a small, invented Greek island in the Aegean Sea, loosely based on Santorini, and ancient ruins hold one of its control points. The real Santorini is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago formed by a caldera. The pin marks Santorini.

War Thunder: Real Places Behind the Ground Maps

War Thunder's tank maps are based on real places: Stalingrad Tractor Plant, Bastogne, Hürtgen Forest, Cologne Cathedral, Berlin's Reichstag, Novorossiysk, Volokolamsk, Breslau (Wrocław), Darwin Hill in the Falklands and the Fulda Gap. The developers say how close each map is to its original, from rebuilt photographs of the Stalingrad factory to a layout only inspired by the real ground. This route follows ten of them in the order of their history, with a short note on what happened at each real place. Maps are classed here as exact only where the developers copy a real district; the rest are marked approximate.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer: From the Shuto Expressway to Irohazaka

Tokyo Xtreme Racer (Shutokō Battle in Japan) is set on the Shuto Expressway: the C1 loop and the Bayshore Route in Tokyo, then Nagoya, Osaka and the Irohazaka mountain road at Nikko. The route follows the series from its Tokyo expressway roots through the Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 city expansion to the Kaido Battle mountain spin-offs. The games recreate long roads, so pins mark one point on each.
