Parasite: Bong Joon-ho's Seoul

Bong Joon-ho's celebrated thriller follows the Kim family from a semi-basement flat to a rich family's villa, and the film's stairs make the class divide physical. The real shops, stairs and tunnel behind those scenes can still be walked across Seoul.

Contains major story spoilers.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Early in the film, Ki-woo sits drinking with a friend outside the Woori Supermarket, and it is here that he learns of a part-time tutoring job. The real shop, Dwaeji Super, stands close to a cluster of furniture stores in Ahyeon-dong, Mapo District, and Seoul's tourism office says the opening scene of the film was shot at this corner store. Inside, fans find Chapagetti and Neoguri noodles shelved side by side, the two ingredients of chapaguri. The parasol and drinking table in the film were set dressing and are gone.

Location precision: The shop is not on the map data we use; the pin marks nearby Ahyeon station.

Visitor guidance: A working corner shop; the area is being redeveloped, so check it still stands.

  2. In the film the Kims earn pennies folding pizza boxes for a place called Pizza Generation. The boxes are real: the family-run Sky Pizza in an old Noryangjin neighbourhood, in Dongjak District, supplied the stacks of green and orange cartons that father Ki-taek folds on screen. Seoul later listed it among four official Parasite sites. Inside there are only four tables, and a photo of the owner with director Bong Joon-ho hangs in the shop.

Location precision: The pin comes from a single map search for the shop in Noryangjin; it may sit a few doors off.

Visitor guidance: A small working pizzeria with four tables; go early, as ingredients can sell out.

  3. Ki-woo walks up a quiet road to the Parks' villa to interview for his tutoring job, posing as a university student. That road is in a northern pocket of Seongbuk District in central Seoul, a roughly 30-minute walk from Hansung University Station. The house itself never existed: the Parks' home was a specially constructed set, so only the approach is real.

Location precision: The articles name only the Seongbuk neighbourhood; the pin marks Seongbuk-dong, not the exact road.

  4. Stairs run all through Parasite, and Bong himself called it a staircase movie. These ones sit just behind Dwaeji Super; in the film they lead down to the alley where the Kim family lives. Here Ki-jung buys peaches and carries them toward the Parks' home, part of the scheme to get her mother a job; the Kims exploit the peach allergy of the Parks' housekeeper Moon-gwang. The neighbourhood has been under redevelopment for years, with new apartment blocks towering over the old houses.

Location precision: The stairs are named only as steps behind the supermarket; the pin marks Ahyeon-dong.

Visitor guidance: Walk quietly; people live along these steps.

  5. On the night of the storm the Kims run from the Parks' house, down a long staircase in pouring rain and into Seoul's Jahamun Tunnel. The stairs are at the northern end of the tunnel in Jongno District; the tunnel itself is about 500 metres long and open to anyone who wants to walk through. By the time the Kims reach home, the torrential rain has flooded their flat with sewage water.

Visitor guidance: The tunnel is open to walk through; the film's stairs are at its northern end.

  6. The Kims' semi-basement flat and its whole street were built on set, partly so the flooding scenes could be shot. Afterwards the family shelters in a gymnasium with other displaced people. The set stood at the Goyang Aqua Special Shooting Studio, but it was demolished when filming finished. Goyang now plans to restore it as a Parasite tourism facility, though critics object to turning areas known for poverty into attractions.

Location precision: The studio's exact site is not mapped; the pin marks central Goyang.

Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears: Katya's Moscow, 1958–1978

Seventeen Moments of Spring: Berlin and Bern on Soviet Film Sets

In the Soviet series Seventeen Moments of Spring, a spy named Stierlitz serves in the SS in Berlin in the last weeks of the Second World War. Very little of it was filmed in the Berlin of 1945. This route follows the story through the places that played its settings, from a Moscow-region park posing as the Bavarian Forest to Riga, Meissen and the hills of Georgia standing in for Bern and the Alps. Every pin marks a stand-in, not a place from the plot.

White Sun of the Desert: From Dagestan to Merv

Red Army soldier Sukhov wants only to go home to his wife, but the desert keeps handing him other people's problems: a man buried to the neck, a harem left in his care, a bandit leader on the loose. The 1969 Soviet classic turned a handful of desert locations into film legend. The route follows the shoot in two expeditions: the Caspian shore and the Sarykum dune in Dagestan, then the Karakum sands and the ruins of Merv in Turkmenistan. Several stops are approximate, because the film's village was a temporary set.
