Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy: Highlands, Madagascar and the Hoysala Temples

Two Naughty Dog adventures, two treasure hunts: the Drake brothers chase a pirate hoard from a hidden cathedral in the Scottish Highlands to the fabled pirate utopia of Libertalia, and Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross follow a trail of Hindu temples through India's Western Ghats to the Tusk of Ganesh.

Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. In Uncharted 4, a map hidden inside a duplicate St. Dismas idol sends Nate and Sam to a cathedral in the Scottish Highlands. There they find a hidden temple and a map marking King's Bay in Madagascar, the next step toward Henry Avery's treasure. The cathedral is the game's invention. The real Highlands are the northernmost mountain ranges of Great Britain, a region of glens and peaks that suits a lost temple well.

Location precision: The cathedral is fictional and the game names no real site; the pin marks the Scottish Highlands as a region.

  2. In King's Bay the Drakes and Sully learn that Avery, Thomas Tew and ten other pirate captains pooled their treasures, and Nate uncovers a map to Libertalia. The game's debut trailer showed an old map of Africa stopping at Madagascar, with Île Sainte-Marie marked. The real island, today Nosy Boraha, is 60 kilometres long and was a pirate base from 1691, when Adam Baldridge arrived, through the 18th century. Tew was among the legendary pirates who lived there.

Location precision: The game's King's Bay is not matched to a real harbour; the pin marks the island the trailer's map highlights.

  3. Following the map, the Drakes reach an island and find Libertalia, a pirate colony gone to ruin. The founders moved the treasure to New Devon, an extravagant, well-fortified town, and Avery and Tew finally poisoned the other founders. Historians treat the place as fiction: its only source is the 1724 General History of the Pyrates. The game changes the legend so that Avery and Tew found it. One legend puts Libertalia on Antsiranana Bay in northern Madagascar.

Location precision: Libertalia is regarded as a literary invention, so no map pin is given.

  4. The Lost Legacy sends Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross through the Western Ghats, following towers marked with Hindu weapons. The trail leads to Halebidu, one of the two Hoysala capitals, but it proves a false trail: the tusk is at the older capital, Belur. In reality Halebidu, once Dorasamudra, was capital for nearly 300 years. Its Hoysaleswara Temple is a twin temple with two shrines and two towers.

Location precision: The game builds its own ruins; the pin marks the real Hoysala temple in Halebidu.

Visitor guidance: The Hoysaleswara Temple is in Halebidu.

  5. At Belur, Chloe and Nadine solve several puzzles before Asav captures them and forces Chloe to use the disc to reveal the tusk. She learns that Ganesh let Parashurama cut off his tusk. The real Belur was the early Hoysala capital. Its Chennakeshava Temple is an active Hindu temple and a major Vaishnava pilgrimage site, only about 16 kilometres from Halebidu.

Location precision: The game's temple is invented; the pin marks the real Chennakeshava Temple in Belur.

Visitor guidance: The temple is still used for worship, so dress and behave as at any active temple.

Metro Exodus: From Moscow to Lake Baikal

In 2035 Artyom leaves the Moscow Metro on a stolen train, the Aurora, and finds that Russia beyond the city is still alive. The sequel to Metro 2033 turns a Moscow underground story into a rail journey across the whole country. The route follows the Volga, the Ark at Yamantau, the Caspian and Novosibirsk to Lake Baikal. The game's places are invented versions of real ones, so every pin is an area, not a level.

Assassin's Creed Mirage: Basim's Baghdad, 861

Basim Ibn Ishaq begins as a street thief with big dreams and ends as a Hidden One in the middle of a hunt for the Order of the Ancients. Ubisoft sets his story in 9th-century Baghdad, in the turbulent years of the Anarchy at Samarra, when the Abbasid caliphs were losing control of their own court. The route follows him from the ruined town of Anbar to the mountain fortress of Alamut, through the districts of Baghdad and on to the oasis of al-Ula. Little of the Round City survives and the House of Wisdom is gone, so those pins are approximate; the Iraqi stops are for reading, not visiting.

Genshin Impact: The Real China Behind Liyue

Genshin Impact's Liyue is a fantasy nation, but its cliffs, pools and harbour were built from real Chinese places. The route follows the landscapes its developers named as models, from Yangshuo and Huanglong to Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Huangshan. Three of them, Zhangjiajie, Huanglong and Guilin, also hosted official in-park collaborations in 2020. The pins mark the real models, not game locations.
