Call of Duty: Black Ops: From Cuba to Rebirth Island

The story opens in April 1961. CIA operatives Alex Mason, Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman join Operation 40 to assist Cuban exiles during the Bay of Pigs invasion and to assassinate Fidel Castro. Mason kills Castro's body double and stays behind so Woods and Bowman can escape, and Cuban forces capture him. The real landing came on 17 April at Playa Girón, where the main invasion force landed on the beach in the Bay of Pigs.

Handed over to the Soviets, Mason ends up in the brutal gulag Vorkuta, where he befriends fellow prisoner Reznov. Later, in October 1963, the two spark an uprising, and Reznov stays behind so that Mason can escape. The real Vorkutlag was established in 1932 with the start of mining, and the camp inmates staged a major rebellion there in 1953.

After the escape, Mason is sent to Baikonur Cosmodrome. His team rescues fellow operative Grigori Weaver, destroys the Soyuz spacecraft and eliminates scientists working for the Ascension group. The real Baikonur is in Kazakhstan, and is the largest operational space launch facility in terms of area. Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, flew from here in 1963, the year the game's raid is set.

In January 1968 Mason's team is deployed to Vietnam as part of MACV-SOG. The first mission has them defending Khe Sanh from a North Vietnamese assault. The real siege began on 21 January 1968, when the PAVN surrounded and besieged the Marine base. For the next five months the base and the hilltop outposts around it faced daily PAVN artillery, mortar and rocket attacks.

In February 1968, during the Tet Offensive, the team infiltrates Hue City to extract a Soviet defector. He turns out to be Reznov. The Citadel, or Imperial City, is the walled-in portion of Huế on the north bank of the Perfume River, and its walls form a square with sides of 2,500 meters.

Hudson and Weaver interrogate Daniel Clarke, a British scientist who helped the Soviets recreate Nova 6, in Kowloon Walled City. Clarke reveals the location of Dragovich's facility on Mount Yamantau before Dragovich's men kill him. The real enclave was, by 1987, the most densely populated spot in the world. The Kowloon Walled City Park was built in its place and opened in December 1995.

Steiner asks to be extracted from Rebirth Island in the Aral Sea, fearing that Dragovich will silence him. Mason, with Reznov at his side, assassinates Steiner just as Hudson and Weaver arrive, but they see Mason pull the trigger while calling himself Reznov. The twist: Reznov died during the Vorkuta breakout, and Mason's visions of him are hallucinations caused by brainwashing. The real Vozrozhdeniya Island hosted Aralsk-7, a Soviet biological testing site expanded in 1954. As the Aral Sea shrank, the island joined the surrounding land.
