Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. A Good Year opens in the City of London, where Max is a successful but arrogant workaholic trader with a cheeky persona. London stood in for the trading sequences, and the shoot used Broadgate, the pedestrian office estate beside Liverpool Street station. It sits on the former site of Broad Street station, which closed in 1986. The film does not tie one scene to one building, so the pin marks the estate as a whole.

Location precision: Sources name Broadgate as a London location but not the exact building or scene.

Visitor guidance: A public, mostly pedestrianised estate next to Liverpool Street station.

  2. Max meets his friend and real estate agent Charlie Willis, played by Tom Hollander, at the Criterion to discuss his plans for his late uncle's vineyard estate in France. The Criterion is an opulent restaurant facing Piccadilly Circus, built in Neo-Byzantine style and opened in 1873. It is a fitting London backdrop for a man about to sell a French vineyard.

Visitor guidance: A working restaurant facing Piccadilly Circus; check opening hours and book ahead.

  3. Max inherits his uncle's Provence vineyard and arrives to sell it. Château La Canorgue in Bonnieux plays the estate, the hill village sitting opposite Mont Ventoux. It is where Max falls into the empty, very dirty swimming pool and has to wait for Fanny to fill it. Only the outside pool scenes were filmed here: the fall itself was shot in a pool dug and concreted nearby.

  4. Fanny Chenal is the local café owner Max knocks off her bicycle on his first day. Her café was shot in a restaurant in Gordes, dressed with items bought from second-hand shops. The restaurant is not named in the sources, so the pin marks the village. Gordes also has a castle partly rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1525, a good reason to wander its streets.

Location precision: Sources say only that the café was shot in a Gordes restaurant, without naming it.

Visitor guidance: Gordes is a village open to visitors; the film's restaurant is not identified.

  5. Max wins over Fanny at a dinner by the water. The scene was shot in Cucuron, where the large quadrangular basin beside the village dates from the early 14th century. The set designer filled the water with floating candles to make it look like a fabulous event.

Visitor guidance: The basin (bassin de l'étang) is north of the village centre.

Jean de Florette: Filming Locations in Provence

Jean de Florette was filmed around Riboux, Mirabeau and Vaugines, with market scenes in Sommières, for Claude Berri's 1986 adaptation of the Provence story. The film follows Ugolin and his uncle Papet, who plug a spring to take over a neighbour's land, and the newcomer Jean de Florette, who farms without knowing it. The route runs from the farm of Les Romarins to the village church and bench; some stops are stand-ins for the story's places.

Il Postino: Procida and Salina

Il Postino (1994) was filmed on two islands: Procida in the Gulf of Naples, where Mario delivers Pablo Neruda's mail around Marina Corricella, Via San Rocco and Piazza dei Martiri, and Salina in the Aeolian Islands, whose Pollara bay hosts Neruda's house and a beach. The film moves the story to Italy around 1950 and never names the island. This route follows the real places: the waterfront bar where Mario meets Beatrice, the village street, the post office square and the two beaches.
