What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The cliff where Danny's body is found is Harbour Cliff in West Bay. In the story, 11-year-old Danny Latimer lies strangled on a beach at the base of seaside cliffs near Broadchurch. The cliff features heavily in the visuals of the series. Clifftop filming was planned for early November 2012, but weather made it unsafe and the crew moved to Clevedon until it cleared. West Bay's town, harbour and beach all appear on screen, and the area saw more visitors after the show aired.

Location precision: The pin marks West Bay Harbour; Harbour Cliff and its beach lie beside it and have no separate listing.

Visitor guidance: Public harbour and beach at West Bay; keep away from cliff edges.

  2. Most of series one was shot in Clevedon, North Somerset, not Dorset. A house in Lavington Close stood in for the Latimer family home, home of Beth and Mark, parents of 11-year-old Danny and of Chloe. This is where the murder lands on an ordinary family. The pin is only the street, and the house is a private home, so view it from the road at most.

Location precision: The source names Lavington Close, not the exact house; the pin marks the street.

  3. St Andrew's Church in Clevedon was used to depict the Broadchurch parish church and graveyard. In the story the church belongs to Reverend Paul Coates, a young Anglican priest in Broadchurch. His attempts to comfort the community show his awkwardness with others and draw suspicion. It sits in the same Somerset town as the Latimer home.

Visitor guidance: Be quiet and respectful: it is a working parish church and graveyard.

  4. Series two returns to West Bay. It follows Joe Miller's trial and the Latimer family's struggle to achieve a normal life. A few scenes were shot on a beach between Freshwater Beach and East Beach, and the crew worked close to East Cliff. In June 2014 West Bay Coastguards criticised filming too near the edge, because rockslides had left the cliffs unstable. The production said it held all permits and had taken safety precautions. Treat the edge with the same caution today.

Location precision: Sources name a beach between Freshwater and East Beach, not one spot; the pin marks East Beach.

Visitor guidance: Stay well back from the unstable cliff edge and below-cliff areas.

  5. Eype was a location in series one and gave the whole production its last shots. Filming for series two ended just before midnight on 12 October 2014, with the final scenes shot here. The story takes place in the fictional, close-knit coastal town of Broadchurch in Dorset. Series one had also used Eype among its villages. The sources do not name an exact spot, so the pin marks the village.

Location precision: The sources name the village of Eype but not a specific spot.

Visitor guidance: Public village on the Dorset coast.

Midsomer Murders: Filming Locations

Midsomer Murders is set in the fictional county of Midsomer but filmed in real places such as Thame, Wallingford, Turville and Warborough in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The series began in 1997 with The Killings at Badger's Drift and made its name from sudden violence in picturesque villages. This route visits five real places that stand in for Causton, Badger's Drift and other corners of Midsomer, from village pubs to a Berkshire airfield. Midsomer itself does not exist, so each pin marks the real place used on screen.

The Olsen Gang: Copenhagen, Vallø and Jutland

The Olsen Gang (Olsen-banden) is set in Copenhagen, from the Designmuseum on Bredgade to the Royal Theatre and City Hall, with Vallø Castle and Hanstholm in Jutland as other film locations. This route follows the Danish heist comedy series from the first film in 1968 to The Olsen Gang Goes to War in 1978. It mixes real places named in the films with stand-ins such as Vallø for the fictional Borreholm, and one Jutland stop is only approximate.
