Dark: Winden and the Time Loop
Winden, town of the series Dark, is fictional, but it was filmed around Berlin and Brandenburg: the Düppeler Forst bridge, the Stahnsdorf cemetery, the Olympiastadion gates and the Einhornhöhle cave in the Harz.
This route follows the story from a teenager's return to school in 2019 to the apocalypse of 2020 and its aftermath, with the real places that stand in for Winden's school, caves, power plant and ruins.
Contains major story spoilers.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Dark opens its teenage world on an old railway bridge in the woods. After his father Michael Kahnwald's suicide, Jonas returns to school following months of psychological treatment, and in the first episode he meets his friends at the bridge. The bridge and the overgrown tracks were filmed at Dreilinden in the Düppeler Forst, on the abandoned Wannsee-Stahnsdorf railway near Lake Wannsee. Winden itself is a fictional small town, so this stretch of Berlin forest is one of its first real faces.
Location precision: The sources place the bridge on the old railway at Dreilinden; the pin marks the Düppeler Forst, not the exact span.
Visitor guidance: The bridge lies on the abandoned Wannsee-Stahnsdorf railway in the Düppeler Forst; stay on public forest paths.

The church where Jonas meets Noah was filmed at the Südwestkirchhof in Stahnsdorf, and the cemetery's wooden chapel stands in for the graveyard of Winden. So two of Winden's settings, the church scene and the town graveyard, come from this one cemetery in Stahnsdorf, just outside Berlin. It is still a working cemetery, so visitors should come quietly.
Visitor guidance: Stahnsdorf South-Western Cemetery is an active cemetery; visit respectfully.

Winden's high school is the Reinfelder Schule in Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district; the scenes in front of and inside the school were shot there. In the story, Jonas comes back to class and finds that Erik Obendorf has been missing for weeks. It is a real, working school, so it can only be seen from the street.

The caves of Winden hide the passage through time. In the story, Mikkel travels back to 1986 through a passage in the Winden caves. For the few shots inside the cave, the crew chose the Südharz Einhornhöhle near Scharzfeld, in the Harz mountains. Scenes in front of the cave entrance, and at the Doppler family's forest hut, were shot in the woods between Tremsdorf and Saarmund in Brandenburg, where the entrance was built; most cave interiors were shot in a studio.
Location precision: Only a few cave shots were filmed here; the entrance was built in Brandenburg and most interiors were shot in a studio.
Visitor guidance: Check the cave's own visiting rules before going.

The truck stop where Bernadette Wöller's parked caravan stands was filmed at the former Dreilinden border checkpoint, known as Checkpoint Bravo, and on the Teltow Canal bridge beside it. The bridge and tracks of the first episode were also filmed at Dreilinden, so two Dark locations lie close together.

Winden's nuclear power plant is built in 1953, the first in Germany according to the series; in 1986 Claudia Tiedemann takes over its management from Bernd Doppler. The gates to the plant are those at the bell tower of Berlin's Olympiastadion, while the reactor towers behind them were computer-animated, so the stadium tower is the only real piece of the plant you can stand in front of.
Visitor guidance: The Olympiastadion and its bell tower are in western Berlin.

The wrecked nuclear plant was staged at the former chemical works in Rüdersdorf, east of Berlin. In the story, the opening of the nuclear waste barrels that plant chief Aleksander Tiedemann had sealed in concrete, ordered by investigator Clausen, sets off the apocalypse in 2020, the event the whole series counts down to.

The third season follows the four families across time after the 2020 apocalypse. For the post-apocalyptic Winden, the production used the former Krampnitz barracks on the northern edge of Potsdam. It stands in for the families' world after the catastrophe.
