What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. In the film, Roger and Peter join Francine and Stephen at a police dock and leave in a stolen WGON-TV news helicopter. The scene is set in Philadelphia, but it was filmed in downtown Pittsburgh, right next to the Monongahela River, at 1 S. 6th St. The building, landing pad and pumps are long gone. The site is now an outdoor art gallery called The Color Park.

  2. After close calls while stopping for fuel, the group finds its refuge. The airfield scenes were shot at the Harold W. Brown Memorial Airfield in Monroeville, an airport about two miles from the mall, so the helicopter's journey on screen is only a short drive in real life.

Location precision: The pin marks Monroeville, not the airfield itself.

  3. The survivors spot a shopping mall and decide to stay, since there is plenty of food, medicine and all kinds of consumables. Filming began on 13 November 1977 in the real mall, open for the Christmas shopping season. The crew worked nightly, from 11 PM, once the mall closed, until 7 AM. The mall still operates, and it now has a Living Dead Museum.

  4. To keep the undead out, the men block the mall entrances with trucks. This means driving through crowds of zombies, who attack the vehicles. The truck yard scene was filmed at the B&P Motor Express Co. in Irwin, Pennsylvania, which is now a First Student school bus company.

Location precision: The pin marks Irwin, not the exact yard.

  5. The gun store seen in the film was not in the mall. For filming, the crew used Firearms Unlimited, a shop that existed in the East Liberty district of Pittsburgh at the time.
