What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Don Matteo becomes parish priest of San Giovanni Battista in Gubbio, and the church's front is where scenes were filmed from the first season to the eighth. The camera only ever uses the exterior; the interiors are another small church. The real building went up between the 13th and 14th centuries; its façade is Gothic and its bell tower Romanesque.

Visitor guidance: Visit the exterior on Piazza San Giovanni in Gubbio's old town.

  2. Marshal Cecchini, Captain Anceschi and later Captain Tommasi serve at the Gubbio Carabinieri station, and the building that plays it is Palazzo Pretorio on Piazza Grande. In real life the building is not a barracks at all: it is Gubbio's town hall.

Visitor guidance: Piazza Grande is open to walk; the building is the town hall.

  3. Palazzo dei Consoli faces Palazzo Pretorio across Piazza Grande and is a landmark for fans of the series. In seasons three to five it served as the town hall of mayor Laura Respighi. On the same square the Bar Ducale is where Don Matteo and Cecchini meet for a chat. The palace was built between 1332 and 1349 and is described as one of the most imposing public palaces in Italy.

Visitor guidance: Piazza Grande is public; the Bar Ducale is on the same square.

  4. For season seven the hospital scenes were shot at the San Giovanni Battista hospital in Foligno, both the exterior and some interiors. Foligno also supplied the outside of the prison in the same season.

Location precision: The pin marks the hospital address found by place search; the exact filmed entrance is not documented.

  5. In season nine the series moves to Spoleto, and Don Matteo becomes parish priest of Sant'Eufemia. The basilica sits in the courtyard of the archbishop's residence, and many scenes were shot inside and outside it from season nine on.

Visitor guidance: The church is inside the archbishop's courtyard in the old town of Spoleto.

  6. From season nine the prison scenes are shot at the Rocca Albornoziana, the fortress above Spoleto. It was built between 1363 and 1367 under Cardinal Albornoz. Today it houses the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto. It stands on the hill above the town, and the prison scenes use it from the series' move to Spoleto onward.

Death in Paradise: Guadeloupe as Saint Marie

Death in Paradise is set on the fictional island of Saint Marie but filmed in Guadeloupe, mainly in Deshaies, which stands in for the town of Honoré, with its police station, beach and bar. Some pins mark the area rather than the exact building.
