Fast & Furious: Filming Locations from Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi
Fast & Furious was filmed in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Puerto Rico, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi, with Rio and the Dominican Republic as story settings. The first film used Echo Park and San Bernardino; later sequels travelled to Shibuya, Naranjito and the Etihad Towers.
The route follows the saga from Dom's Los Angeles streets through Tokyo, the Dominican Republic, Rio and Puerto Rico to Atlanta and Abu Dhabi. Several stops can be visited; some cities were stand-ins for other places.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The saga begins on the streets of Los Angeles. The first film was shot in various locations within the city, and Angelino Heights, Silver Lake and Echo Park are the neighbourhoods around the Toretto house, where the family and street-racing story starts. The house, Bob's Market and the other Los Angeles spots of the first film have a route of their own on this site (Fast & Furious: Dom Toretto's Los Angeles); here the pin marks Angelino Heights and the saga moves on.
Location precision: This saga route marks only the neighbourhood around the Toretto house; the dedicated Los Angeles route pins the spots.
Visitor guidance: A residential area; walk the streets and respect residents.

Race Wars, the big import-car meet in the first film, was filmed at San Bernardino International Airport. The production drew over 1,500 import car owners and enthusiasts to the venue, so the crowd of tuned cars on screen was largely real. It set the template for the franchise: the cars come first, the plot follows.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift filmed in Los Angeles and Tokyo, making it the first film in the franchise to feature an international filming location. Shibuya Crossing, one of the world's busiest pedestrian crossings, is among the Tokyo landmarks the film features. The film is set between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7.
Visitor guidance: Free and open at all hours; the junction is busiest in the evening.

Fast & Furious opens with Dom Toretto and his crew living in the Dominican Republic for five years, after their fuel tanker heist. The film's filming locations included Los Angeles and the Dominican Republic, and the short prequel Los Bandoleros was produced there too.

Fast Five takes the crew to Rio de Janeiro. The Rio film unit captured aerial shots of Sugarloaf Mountain, Fort Copacabana, Ipanema Beach and the Christ the Redeemer statue. A scene where the completed heist team walk down a beach was filmed in Copacabana. The main cast travelled to Rio so the film would have a real sense of place.
Location precision: The Rio shots were mostly aerial and establishing; the pin marks the Christ the Redeemer statue.
Visitor guidance: Christ the Redeemer is a visitor attraction reached from Corcovado.

The favela rooftop chase in Fast Five was not shot in Rio. The rooftop pursuit across favelas was filmed in Puerto Rico, over the course of a week in the small hillside town of Naranjito, where the production could have more control. Paths were slippery in the tropical heat, and a long cable-camera rig gave the fast-moving bird's-eye view of the action.

In Furious 7 Dom and Brian steal a Lykan HyperSport and drive it through three of the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi. The production chose Abu Dhabi over Dubai because the emirate offered a 30% rebate scheme. The five-tower complex stands opposite the Emirates Palace hotel and holds offices, apartments and a hotel.
Visitor guidance: The towers are a hotel and office complex; view from outside or book the hotel.
