Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The film opens its road-movie feel with a chase: Voldemort and the Death Eaters travel to Surrey to apprehend Harry, and Harry and Hagrid are ambushed on the run. The production filmed that dramatic chase at the Dartford Crossing, the road crossing. The crossing is a working motorway link, so it is something to see from the road rather than a place to stop.

In the story Harry and Hermione search Godric's Hollow for the sword. Lavenham in Suffolk was used for it in 2010, under conditions of strict secrecy. The village's De Vere House represented sections of Godric's Hollow, as backgrounds, since the cast members did not actually visit Lavenham. The pin marks the village centre, not one exact building.
Location precision: The sources name De Vere House in Lavenham, but give no exact filming spot; the pin marks the village.
Visitor guidance: Lavenham is a village you can walk around freely; De Vere House is a landmark to look for.

In the Forest of Dean, Harry follows a doe patronus to the frozen pond where Gryffindor's sword lies on the bottom. He gets into trouble in the water and is rescued by Ron, who also retrieves the sword. J. K. Rowling sets several crucial chapters of her final Harry Potter book in this forest. The pin marks the forest in Gloucestershire as named in the story, not a filming site.
Location precision: The story names the whole Forest of Dean and no single pond; the pin marks the forest, not a film set.
Visitor guidance: No pond in the forest is tied to the film.

After the Snatchers capture the three, they are brought to Malfoy Manor. Hardwick Hall supplied the exterior scenes and some interior scenes. Designer Craig said the manor's exterior is based on this Elizabethan house.

The group reaches the seaside cottage of Bill and Fleur, and it is where Dobby dies. Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire was the film location: the beach scenes with Dobby the elf were filmed here, and Shell Cottage was constructed at the foot of the sand dunes. The cottage was removed after filming. The National Trust for Wales has asked visitors not to leave painted pebbles or socks as tributes.
Visitor guidance: A public beach; please leave no tributes at Dobby's grave, as the National Trust asks.
