What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Harry runs away and is picked up by the Knight Bus. The best-known stretch of the ride is on Lambeth Bridge in London, where the bus squeezes between two double-deckers. To make it look fast, the crew drove the bus at about 30 miles per hour while the other cars went only about 8.

Visitor guidance: Walk across the bridge for the Knight Bus view.

  2. The Knight Bus ends its run at the Leaky Cauldron, and in this film the pub moves house. The new Cauldron stands beneath the railway bridge on Stoney Street, opposite Borough Market, with 7 Stoney Street dressed as the pub. Here Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge assures Harry that he will not face punishment. Borough Market and the streets around it have also hosted Bridget Jones's Diary and other films.

Visitor guidance: Borough Market and Stoney Street are open to walk around; check market days before you go.

  3. On the way to Hogwarts, the Hogwarts Express is boarded by Dementors searching for Black, and Professor Lupin repels one. The sequences of the Dementor boarding the train were filmed on the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands, on the West Highland Line. The curving viaduct is now nicknamed "The Harry Potter Bridge". Fans bring in many tourists, and British Transport Police have had to warn people not to walk on it.

Visitor guidance: Look from the paths near Glenfinnan; never walk on the viaduct.

  4. Hagrid becomes the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher, but his first class goes awry. The film is the first of the series to use real locations extensively, and three of its sets were built in Glen Coe, near the Clachaig Inn, including Hagrid's hut, which now seems perched on a steep hillside. The sets stood near the bottom of Clachaig Gully, north of the inn.

Location precision: The sets were built near the foot of Clachaig Gully; the pin marks the Clachaig Inn nearby, not the exact spot.

Visitor guidance: The Clachaig Inn marks the area; the sets are no longer there.

  5. Draco Malfoy provokes the hippogriff Buckbeak to attack him in Hagrid's class, and Buckbeak is sentenced to death. Later, Harry's ride on Buckbeak over Hogwarts' lake was filmed at Virginia Water Lake in Surrey, the same lake where Harry later confronts the Dementors. The Scottish alternative was ruled out because of the number of midges.

  6. Near the end, Harry drives the Dementors away with a Patronus charm, saving himself and Black. For the Black Lake the crew filmed from Loch Shiel, Loch Eilt and Loch Morar in the Scottish Highlands, so no single shore is the Black Lake. The Glenfinnan Viaduct, where the train sequences were shot, is opposite Loch Shiel.

Location precision: Several lochs stood in for the Black Lake; the pin marks the middle of Loch Shiel, not a specific shot.

Visitor guidance: Loch Shiel is reached from Glenfinnan, next to the viaduct.

  7. After the Dementors attack, Harry wakes in the hospital wing. Those scenes were filmed in the Divinity School at the University of Oxford. Built between 1427 and 1483, it is the oldest surviving purpose-built building for university use, and its lierne vaulting has 455 bosses.

Gone Girl: Filming Locations in Cape Girardeau

Gone Girl is set in the made-up town of North Carthage, Missouri, but David Fincher shot it almost entirely in Cape Girardeau: The Bar on Themis Street, the Common Pleas Courthouse, the old federal building and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge over the Mississippi. The route follows Nick Dunne's first days as the husband of a missing woman, from the bar to the press conference, the vigil, the police station and the bridge. One stop, the Drury Lodge, is marked approximately: it has closed and the pin sits on its street.
