What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Aatlis is a Flashpoint map that arrived with Season 17 in June 2025, a vibrant showcase of the beauty and culture of Morocco. Blizzard calls it the hub of trade and artistry: lush gardens, luxury resort spaces and historical artisan guilds, plus a high-tech hyperloop rail that can take players anywhere on the map. It is built for tighter fights, cleaner rotations and fast-paced momentum.

Location precision: Blizzard names only Morocco, no city, so this stop has no pin.

  2. The Temple of Anubis is a Capture map on the Giza Plateau in the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. Early on, Blizzard tested the game's core mechanics on a single map based on it, playing as Tracer. In the story the temple is the entrance to a top-secret underground facility that does research on artificial intelligence. The temple is invented; the pin marks the Giza pyramid complex.

  3. Petra is a free-for-all Deathmatch map added on 22 May 2018, in which a group of archaeologists have begun an excavation and preservation project among the ruins of Petra. It is a fictionalized version of the real site, an ancient city and archaeological site in southern Jordan that became a World Heritage Site in 1985. The map puts every hero on their own, facing off against one another.

  4. Oasis is a Control map with three points, set in Iraq and portrayed as one of the most technologically advanced places in the world, in contrast to games that show the near-future country as ravaged by war. The team set out to create an idealistic version of Iraq, with an arena inside an arena at each point. The sources name only the country, so the pin marks Iraq.

  5. Suravasa is a Flashpoint map from Season 6, August 2023, which Blizzard places in India: an exotic cityscape with gardens, fountains and lagoons. Both teams chase a central objective called a Flashpoint, brawling across intricate markets, temples and ruins. Blizzard calls it one of its largest PvP maps, and says it connects to existing lore with Zenyatta and Symmetra.

  6. Nepal is a Control map from the May 2016 launch, set at the omnic monastery of Shambali in the Himalayas, founded by Tekhartha Mondatta and home of Zenyatta and Genji. Blizzard built it, with Ilios and Dorado, on the idea of a vacation spot. The Shambali are placed in the Himalayas in northern Nepal, but no village is named, so the pin marks the Himalayas of Nepal.

  7. Lijiang Tower is a Control map from the May 2016 launch, set in the heart of Lijiang, China, and home to Lucheng Interstellar, the company assumed to have run the lunar base where Winston was raised. The tower is invented, but the real Old Town of Lijiang, the historical centre of Lijiang City in Yunnan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  8. Busan arrived in August 2018 as a Control map, released alongside the animated short Shooting Star about D.Va. In the story D.Va is a professional eSports gamer from Busan, South Korea, recruited with other pro gamers by the Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA) to help quell an uprising by robotic omnics. Overwatch has no story mode, so lore like D.Va's is shown in-game through map design and character voice lines. No district is named, so the pin marks the city.

  9. Hanamura is a Capture map from the May 2016 launch: the ancestral home in Japan of the Shimada crime family, of which Hanzo and Genji are the heirs. In the animated short Dragons, Hanzo returns to the Shimada castle in Hanamura to honor his brother Genji. The town is invented. A Blizzard developer who worked on it recalls that the team focused on highlighting the traditional beauty of Kyoto, so the pin marks Kyoto.

  10. Neon Junction is a Hybrid map added in the patch of 18 June 2026, set beneath glowing storefronts on the streets of Tokyo. The team looked at various districts of Tokyo, and Shibuya, Akihabara and Ginza were some of the biggest sources of inspiration. A developer had long wanted a Tokyo map: as Hanamura is the home of the Shimada clan, Neon Junction represents the Hashimoto clan. Some posters on the map are fictional anime made up by the team.

War Thunder: Real Places Behind the Ground Maps

War Thunder's tank maps are based on real places: Stalingrad Tractor Plant, Bastogne, Hürtgen Forest, Cologne Cathedral, Berlin's Reichstag, Novorossiysk, Volokolamsk, Breslau (Wrocław), Darwin Hill in the Falklands and the Fulda Gap. The developers say how close each map is to its original, from rebuilt photographs of the Stalingrad factory to a layout only inspired by the real ground. This route follows ten of them in the order of their history, with a short note on what happened at each real place. Maps are classed here as exact only where the developers copy a real district; the rest are marked approximate.
