What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The series opens with Professor Klaus Brinkmann returning as chief physician to his home town, and the building that plays his hospital is the Carlsbau in Glottertal near Freiburg, built in 1913 and 1914. Only the exteriors were shot in the Black Forest; every interior was filmed at Studio Hamburg. Fans still arrive expecting an operating theatre, though the building has housed a psychosomatic clinic since 2014. It became a favourite of fan tourism, so look at it from outside.

  2. The Brinkmann house, home of Professor Klaus Brinkmann and the tensions with his son Dr. Udo Brinkmann, was the Heimatmuseum Hüsli in Grafenhausen. The series makes everything look a short walk apart, but Grafenhausen lies roughly 60 km from the Titisee and well away from Glottertal. Film geography here is a patchwork stitched together in the edit.

  3. The town around the clinic is fictional and was played by Schiltach in the Kinzig valley. Filming took place on the Marktplatz and in the Gerbergasse in the old town. In all, the crew shot at 31 places in the Black Forest, and Schiltach is the one that gives the series its everyday streets.

Location precision: The film shows no named street as the town, so the pin marks the Marktplatz where filming took place.

Visitor guidance: The old town is public; the Marktplatz and Gerbergasse are the filming spots.

  4. In episode 6, Die Entführung, a story of robbery and kidnapping, the bank hold-up takes place in Schluchsee. The community on the lake stands in for the scene, far from the clinic's Glottertal. The same episode shows how the series sends its story all over the Black Forest.

Location precision: The sources name the municipality of Schluchsee, not the bank building.

Visitor guidance: Schluchsee is a public lakeside community.

  5. Well-known Black Forest sights such as the Triberg waterfalls served as settings in the series, along with the Titisee, which lies about 30 km east of Glottertal. They were part of the postcard Black Forest the series sold.

Location precision: The source says only that the waterfalls appear as a setting, not in which scene.

Visitor guidance: The waterfalls are a public attraction in Triberg.

  6. One episode was filmed at Freiburg University Hospital, in the lecture hall for internal medicine and the clinical chemistry teaching lab. Medical students of 1985 took part as extras, and the old town of Freiburg also appears in the series.

  7. In season 3, Christa Brinkmann moves to a research institute in Konstanz, and several episodes show exterior shots of the University of Konstanz campus. It is the series' view of the research world beyond the Black Forest, at the other end of the state.

Visitor guidance: The campus is a public university site.

Winnetou: Croatia's Wild West

The Winnetou films of the 1960s are set in the Wild West but were shot in Croatia: the Silver Lake is Plitvice, the Apache pueblo stood above the Zrmanja canyon and Santa Fe is the town of Trogir. This route follows three of the films (Der Schatz im Silbersee, Winnetou 1 and Winnetou 3, 1962 to 1965) from Plitvice and Paklenica to the Krka falls, Trogir and Mali Alan, where Winnetou dies. Most sets were torn down after filming, but the landscapes remain.
