K-On!: Toyosato, Kyoto and London

  1. The anime never names its setting, only the all-girls Sakuragaoka High School, where four girls join the light music club. Toyosato's old school buildings, designed by William Merrell Vories, are listed as the model for that school. Kyoto Animation, the studio behind the series, denies the link, so treat it as a fan identification rather than a confirmed location. Today the buildings are listed among Toyosato's local attractions.

場所の精度: Kyoto Animation denies the link; the pin marks the old school buildings that fans and local guides identify as the model.

訪問のヒント: Listed among Toyosato's local attractions.

  2. The girls' daily route to school borrows the look of Kyoto's Eizan Electric Railway: the stations and trains of Shugakuin, Ichijoji and Demachiyanagi appear in the series, and fans make pilgrimages to them. The anime in general draws on scenery in Kyoto, especially Sakyo ward. Shugakuin sits on the Eizan Main Line in Sakyo ward, Kyoto.

場所の精度: The anime only resembles these stations and sets its story in an unnamed place; the pin marks Shugakuin Station on the Eizan Main Line.

訪問のヒント: The station is on the Eizan Main Line in Sakyo ward.

  3. When the girls need gear, they visit the record and instrument shop called 10GIA. The shop exists only in the story, but it is modelled on the JEUGIA Sanjo main store in Nakagyo ward, Kyoto. It is one of the Kyoto places the show uses as a drawing model.

場所の精度: 10GIA exists only in the story; the real store that served as its model is JEUGIA's Sanjo main store, and no verified pin is available.

  4. Cars of the Kita-Kinki Tango Railway, now the Kyoto Tango Railway, and the Yura River railway bridge appear in these scenes. The story never names where the camp is held.

場所の精度: The story names no camp location; the pin marks the Yura River railway bridge that appears in the camp scenes.

  5. On the way to a summer music festival, the club members meet at a station, and the scene resembles JR West's Uji Station. As with the other transport stops on this route, the anime presents a lookalike rather than naming the place.

  6. After graduating, the four friends travel to London in the film, an original story produced by Kyoto Animation. The film features a London cafe inspired by the Troubadour in Earl's Court, which K-On! fans often visit. The real Troubadour stands at 265 Old Brompton Road. The cafe in the film is fictional, so the pin marks the real place that inspired it.

Lucky Star: Washinomiya and Kasukabe

Lucky Star is set in Saitama, north of Tokyo, and its anime borrows real places: Washinomiya Shrine in Kuki, Kasukabe Station, the Gongendo embankment in Satte and Akihabara. The route follows the four high-school girls from their neighbourhoods to the shrine where fans began their pilgrimages in 2007, then on to Akihabara and Tokyo Big Sight. The anime changes some names, so several pins mark a model, not an exact scene.

Andrei Rublev: From Moscow to Suzdal

Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev follows a medieval icon painter through the Russia of 1400–1424, and its key scenes were shot around Vladimir and Suzdal, from the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl to the Dormition Cathedral. The route also visits the Izborsk Fortress, where the Vladimir raid was filmed, plus the Andronikov Monastery in Moscow, where the story starts and ends, and the Trinity Lavra, home of Rublev's most famous icon, which the film shows in its colour epilogue. Some stops are filming spots rather than named story places.

Mimino: From Telavi to Moscow

Mimino, Georgiy Daneliya's 1977 comedy about a Georgian helicopter pilot, was filmed in the Tusheti village of Omalo, at the Hotel Rossiya, the Bolshoi Theatre and Butyrka prison in Moscow, and at Tegel airport in West Berlin. The route follows Valentin Mizandari from his mountain home to Moscow's hotels, courts and airports, and on to the Berlin phone call that connects him to Tel Aviv. Several sites are only stand-ins for the story's places, and the Hotel Rossiya is gone.
