Long Way Down follows Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's 2007 motorbike ride from John o' Groats in Scotland through Silverstone, Tunisia and the pyramids of Giza to Cape Agulhas and Cape Town.

  1. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman began Long Way Down on 12 May 2007 at the northern tip of Scotland, 690 miles from London. The start was nearly delayed by Boorman's run-in with an official at Gatwick Airport; he took a later flight to Inverness, and the journey began as scheduled. They rode BMW R1200GS Adventure bikes through eighteen countries to Cape Town.

  2. The first leg was a four-day ride from John o' Groats back to London, via the McGregor family home in Crieff. On the way they also stopped at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, and camped in the middle of the circuit. After that they took the Channel Tunnel to France and rode south to Italy.

  3. After the Sicily ferry, the riders landed in Tunisia and, in the series, visited the set of Star Wars. Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia at Tozeur and Ghomrassen, and abandoned sets from the filming still stand in the desert and can be visited. On arrival the team bribed the local authorities with a few bottles of vodka. Next they rode into Libya.

  4. Two of the crew, the producer and a cameraman, could not get entry visas for Libya and had to fly from Tunisia to Egypt instead. The riders visited the pyramids, among the largest ever built in ancient Egypt, before boarding a ferry to Sudan. From there the route ran through Ethiopia to Kenya, where they crossed the equator.

  5. The journey ended on 4 August 2007 at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the African continent. From there a phalanx of bikers accompanied McGregor and Boorman to Cape Town, similar to their arrival in New York on Long Way Round. The cape is the start of the traditional dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian oceans; a survey marker and a marker shaped like Africa stand at the tip.

Trans-Siberian Railway: Moscow to Vladivostok

The Trans-Siberian Railway runs 9,289 kilometres from Moscow's Yaroslavsky Station across Krasnoyarsk, Lake Baikal and Khabarovsk to Vladivostok, crossing a record eight time zones. The line was begun in 1891 and finished only when the Amur bridge opened in 1916. This route follows it west to east through five landmarks: the two matching terminal stations, the great Yenisei bridge, the loop line around Baikal and the long Amur crossing.

Semyon Dezhnev: Round the Tip of Asia, 1648

In 1648 Semyon Dezhnyov sailed from the Kolyma River past Cape Dezhnev and through the Bering Strait, eighty years before Vitus Bering entered the strait in 1728, and ended up wrecked near the mouth of the Anadyr. The route follows the voyage from Srednekolymsk to the cape, the Diomede Islands, the Anadyr mouth and the winter quarters at Anadyrsk. Some details, including the exact route, are debated, so most pins are approximate.

Burke and Wills: Melbourne to the Gulf

The Burke and Wills expedition of 1860–61 set out from Royal Park in Melbourne to cross Australia from south to north, by way of Menindee, the Dig Tree on Cooper Creek and the swamps near the Gulf of Carpentaria. Only one man of the four who made the dash north came back alive. The route follows the journey in order, from the crowd-watched departure to the tree where a carved message and a buried cache were missed by hours, and ends at the Melbourne General Cemetery, where a state funeral was held in 1863. The Gulf pin is approximate: the party's last camp, not a proven shore.
